Phelan Hall, named after SI grad James Phelan (1881), will now be called Toler Hall after Burl Toler, the first African American to serve on SI's Board of Regents. (Burl's sons are all SI grads — Burl '74, Greg '80 and Martel '83.) Burl Sr. also received SI's President's Award and was the first African American referee for the NFL. Burl was also a member of the 1951 USF football team, considered the greatest single college football team of all time. It was also an "unbeaten, untied and uninvited" team because the team was not invited to play the Orange Bowl because of it had African American players on the team.
