Richard McHugh passed away peacefully on April 5th at the age of 89, at his daughter's home with them at his side. He was the loving husband of the late Josephine and the adored and devoted father to Kathleen and Margaret.
He was the cherished grandson of Cecilia McHugh (d) and the loved son of Genevieve Bowie (d) and most endeared nephew of Cecil C. McHugh (d). Dick was the eldest of his siblings; James Bowie (d) (Anna), Robert (d) (Arlene), Cecil Powell (d) and Genevieve Cava (Rich). Uncle to many loving nieces and nephews. Dick shared a unique love for his cousins Bonnie (Ron) Herbst; Donna Cadigan and her children, Stacey and Sean; Tracy (Mike) Kennedy and their sons Colton and Tyler; and enjoyed a special bond with Gregg (Cathy) Steele.
Dick was a native of San Francisco attending St. Peter's and Star of the Sea Grammar Schools, and graduated from St. Ignatius High School on February 4th, 1945. Upon graduation, Dick joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his Country.
In 1950, Dick became a brewer at Burgermeister Brewery in San Francisco (thank you Dutch!) where he remained a faithful employee for 25 years. Dick continued in the brewery industry for 5 years and then worked for Bay Meadows Race Track until his retirement.
Jo and Dick were married on September 8th, 1951 at St. Vincent de Paul Church with Fr. Daniel I. Riordan officiating. They lived in the Marina until May 1954, when they bought their home in Westlake. Jo and Dick were part of the many young families who were the founding members of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, where they worked tirelessly on many committees that supported the church. One could always find Dick working at the weekly bingo games, the annual festival – especially the fish bowl booth and as an usher at Sunday Mass.
Dick was loving, kind and generous; always special kisses on your forehead. He always just called to say I love you, and he meant it from the bottom of his heart!
Kathleen and Margaret wish to extend special thanks to the Umbertus Family and Maria Caruana for their support and love.
Visitation for family and friends will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11th at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Robert's Church, 1380 Crystal Springs Rd., San Bruno with the Committal to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Rd., Colma.
In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in memory of Richard W. McHugh to:
