They support the Jesuit philosophy of cura personalis and cura communis, caring for the individual and maintaining positive, respectful relationships with all members of the community. They also support Jesuit commitment to a faith that does justice.

They meet the needs of students of differing backgrounds and abilities and encouraging students to be risk-takers who learn from their mistakes. They also model and encourage an enthusiastic desire for lifelong learning.

They are also well prepared and engage in ongoing professional development. Nearly 100 hold masters degrees, and another five have earned their doctoral degrees.

Jan is in her 28th year teaching in the Physical Education Department at St. Ignatius. She earned both a B.A. in Physical Education and a California State Teaching Credential from California State University, San Francisco. In 2003, Jan earned a Fitness Instruction Certificate from California State University, Hayward and in 2014, she earned a Master's Degree in Kinesiology from St. Mary's College.

Jan served as Head Coach of the Girls' Soccer Program and Girls' Varsity Soccer Coach for 18 years, winning 8 league championships. Since 2013, she has been the Freshmen Girls' Soccer Coach and has won 3 league championships. Jan holds a State "D" license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and both a Regional and National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

In 1995, Jan was awarded the Central Coast Section Coach's Honor Award. In 2002, she was inducted into the Soccer Old Timer's Hall of Fame and in 2010, was inducted into the California Soccer Association North (CSAN) Hall of Fame.
