  • Rethinking Africa: The staff of the African Advocacy Network includes Joe Sciarrillo, pictured here with Jean Elias Xavier, Director Aboudou Traore, Charles Jackson and Clementine Ntshaykolo outside their office in the Dolores Street Community Services building. They help a growing number of African immigrants to the Bay Area who may number as many as 50,000.
  • Retiring Pillars: SI’s faculty surprised Fr. Sauer in May with applause and flowers after the announcement of his reassignment.
  • The SI boys’ lacrosse team enjoyed what may have been best year since its founding nearly a quarter century ago. The lacrosse press ranked the team among the top 15 in the nation as SI turned in another undefeated season in league play – its fourth undefeated season since it joined the WCAL in 2010.
  • Richard Driscoll ’06, a performance engineer for Oracle Team USA that will defend the America’s Cup in September, is among the few locals hunkering down in Pier 80 off Marin Street, where they work 65-hour weeks to make sure that Ellison’s boat sails twice as fast as the wind and maneuvers with precision and power as it takes on challengers from around the world.
  • Retiring Pillars: Since the 1970s, Mary McCarty made sure Latin was a living language for students in her classes.
  • Rethinking Africa: Ira Shaughnessy ’00 spent two years in Ghana from 2007 to 2009 working with the Bormase helping with the cultivation of the Moringa tree, whose leaves are rich in vitamins.

Mr. Kevin Asbra

Position: Director of Guidance with a small caseload of freshman students

Quick Fact: I have a wife of 23 years and twin sons in the 6th grade at St. Brendan.

Mr. Andrew Laguna

Position: Teacher of RS 200, worker in Campus Ministry, and coach of Cross Country

Quick Fact: I'm from Chino Hills (Southern California) and I've been a Jesuit five years (I'm an incoming regent).

Mr. Pierre Carmona

Position: Teacher of English 200 & 300

Quick Fact: I'm a twin.

Br. Joe Frias, SJ

Position: Member of the Adult Spirituality team

Quick Fact: I am a native San Franciscan.

Ms. Alexandra Roberti

Position: Teacher of Freshman English and Senior Modern American Authors

Quick Fact: I enjoy baking sourdough, and I was given a South African name when I traveled there this summer: Nomagugu--it means one who treasures.

Sr. Sharon Brannen

Position: Working primarily with the Immersion Program and the Sophomore retreats, also helping with music ministry, and set building for the Performing Arts

Quick Fact: I have been with the Canossian Sisters since 1991, which I enjoy tremendously, and my hobbies include building things and boxing.

Ms. Helena Miller-Fleig

Position: Teacher in the Religious Studies Department--two sophomore Scripture classes (RS200: "The Challenge of Scripture"), and two senior elective World Religions classes (RS447: "Spirituality East & West")

Quick Fact: My husband and I are both from New York, and moved to San Francisco five years ago. We have a son now, and my sister and parents have moved here, too, so we are "officially" a California family now.

Ms. Lana Sum

Position: Teacher of Latin 2, 2H, and 3H plus Learning Center, and co-moderator of JCL

Quick Fact: I recently taught English in a rural Thai village for a year.

Mr. Alex Llanera, SJ

Position: Teacher in the Religious Studies and Social Science Departments, specifically AP U.S. Government, Scripture, and Liturgy; Freshman Football Chaplain.

Quick Fact: I am from Sacramento, CA, and I enjoy listening to music. 

Ms. Stacey Ho

Position: College Counselor (replacing Mr. Kelly)

Quick Fact: I just went jet skiing for the first time in my life and LOVED it!!

Fr. Ed Harris

Postion: Jesuit Superior, member of the Adult Spitirtuality Team

Quick Fact: I am a graduate of SI Class of 1963, and I worked at SI as College Counselor from 1985-88.
