My SI Story
When you teach students about the preferential option for the poor, first you start with the theory.
Then you put it into practice … delivering sandwiches to Martin de Porres before school begins and going on immersion experiences to spend time with people whose worlds are very different from our own.
My own experience was that of an immigrant. I came to this country from El Salvador without the resources my classmates had. I went to Dartmouth thanks to a scholarship, and that gave me more freedom and more confidence.
Scholarships at SI offer our students the same freedom and the same confidence. We want to elevate all of our students and challenge them by exposing them to a global education. There are many students living in the inner city who don’t have SI on their radar. They might feel we’re out of reach for them. But they are precisely the ones we need right here. They allow us to share multiple stories and expose everyone to different histories that add to the richness of this place.
I’ve taught Spanish and coached soccer here for years. I’ve learned to see SI as a laboratory where intellectual curiosity is put to the test. We’re also a family that cares for one another with compassion.
Please consider donating to SI, because students deserve the freedom to follow their passions, and every seed planted can bloom into something amazing.
