Peter Devine '66 awarded Charles T. Murphy Educator of the Year Award

SI Principal Patrick Ruff gave veteran English teacher and director Peter Devine '66 the Charles T. Murphy Educator of the Year Award at Friday's Awards Assembly.

Here is the text of Principal Ruff's remarks:

The Charles T. Murphy Ignatian Educator Award is given annually to the faculty member whose expert teaching and dedication to promoting the Ignatian mission in and out of the classroom has a profound effect upon the St. Ignatius community. It is named in honor of Chuck Murphy who embodied the best of Ignatian education for nearly 50 years!

This year's recipient has served as a teacher, director, department chair, moderator, and mentor. In fulfilling each of these roles, this educator's work has always been a labor of love, a living gift that never counts the cost, a body of work that continues to manifest a true vocation, a clear calling to teach and minister to young people and colleagues, AND a time of service that has always and continues to be deeply imbued with the spirit of AMDG - for the greater glory of God.

He is a man of extreme perseverance and tenacity and who exhibits a high degree of professionalism in all that he does. In the classroom, he provides an exceptional educational experience that enhances his students' learning but with a keen eye for the young man or young woman that may need some extra support or attention. He is a master with the Socratic style of teaching – asking questions that elicit in-depth responses from students. His classes are more than English classes; they are experiences in which students learn to read and write, but also learn about the past so that they will make a difference in our future. He teaches students, not simply a subject.

This teacher is also very supportive of life beyond room 120. He has served on many committees, acted as department chair, and moderated multiple clubs at SI, including, Inside SI. However, most impressive is his run as our Theater Director, doing over 100 shows. He put SI theater on the map and his former students have starred in film, television, and on Broadway, have written and directed, and have won several major awards including the prestigious Tony Award – multiple times! In addition, he has edited countless college essays, counseled a multitude of students, and written hundreds of college recommendations. He has an overwhelming spirit of generosity that finds its seed at his very core and a sincere desire to make our world a better place through faith, hope, and love. He has led retreats at every level, regularly is involved in service opportunities, and is at every Friday Morning Liturgy.

Caring, sensitive, smart, and respectful, he is the quintessential professional who has provided an example of generosity that serves as a model for all. He lives out the Ignatian ideal that love is best shown through actions. Most impressive, however, is his genuine love of this community, the faculty, the students and their families. He has set a standard of wisdom as an educational leader, of devotion as a dedicated and caring colleague, and of friendship as a true and loving man that has literally touched the minds and hearts of thousands. There is no doubt that this Ignatian educator has changed the worlds of his students and inspired them to go out and set the world on fire.

So, today, I have the great privilege to award the Charles T. Murphy Ignatian Educator Award to a man who has also served his alma mater for an amazing 45 years...

Peter Devine.
