On March 17, Kevin Reidy '18 competed in the annual "Battle of the Bands" competition at the Jewish Community Center on California Street. The event featured a dozen bands made up of high school age musicians from around the Bay Area, including SHC's popular band, "Peer Pressure". The competition involved two rounds of judging by a panel of five professionals working in the music industry, and a final elimination round that was voted on by the audience.

Kevin became the first winner in the history of the competition to win as a solo artist. Playing guitar, harmonica and vocals, Kevin performed his original compositions "Unfortunate Son" and "Faked a Smile", as well as a cover of the Paul Simon song "The Only Living Boy in New York". Kevin's recordings can be heard on the website SoundCloud, under the stage name Pope Suburban.

The awards for winning the competition included a cash prize, a recording studio session for Kevin to record and produce his songs, his being invited to be one of the opening acts for the S.F. Rock Project performance at the Hotel Utah (back on March 25), and a radio show featuring Kevin with an interview and performance. The radio show will be live this coming Monday, May 28 on KPOO - FM 89.5. It will be on the show of DJ Marilynn from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. KPOO is POOr People's Radio, a Community Radio station, and can also be heard on kpoo.com.
