Anthony P. Sauer, S.J.: 1934–2021

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Anthony P. Sauer, S.J.

Tony first came to St. Ignatius College Preparatory in 1965 and served as president for 27 years, from 1979–2006, overseeing the school's growth into a college preparatory of national stature and its transition to co-education. From English class, to sporting events, to weddings, to baptisms, to long-running written correspondence and more, he was a fixture in the lives of generations of Wildcats. From 1974–1979, Tony was rector and president of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, and in recent years had returned to Arizona to serve as a parish priest.

You can read more about his time at SI in this tribute published in Genesis upon his retirement in 2006 and this Q&A conducted when he was reassigned to Arizona in 2013.

Funeral Mass

The funeral Mass for Tony took place on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at St. Ignatius Church, in San Francisco. For those unable to attend in person or watch the livestream, the full recording of the service is now available on the St. Ignatius parish YouTube channel.

We have also published a short video remembrance of Tony that was played at the reception.
