Jazz Combo

Grade Level – 9, 10, 11, 12
Length – One Semester; offered after school/evenings ONLY

Type of Course – Elective; this class is not counted in the student's SI GPA 
Prerequisite – Jazz Band A/B
Criteria for Enrollment – Admission is by audition. Enrollment may be limited to necessary instrumentation. Enrollment is via roster submitted by instructor. Students should not list this course on their Schedule Request Forms.
Time Commitment – Meets 1 afternoon per week for 2 hours, plus performances.
 
Course Description — Jazz Combo prepares students to perform a variety of musical competitions from the 1940s through the present, focusing primarily on small-ensemble jazz and solo improvisation.  This class is available to students who have taken private lessons for at least one year, or participated in their middle school Band program.  Jazz Combo will perform at the Winter Concerts, the Spring Pops Concerts, the Performing Arts Assembly, and several additional performances at SI and around the Bay Area.

This course is offered outside of the 8:20-2:30pm school day.

Jazz Band

Course Description — Jazz Band prepares students to perform a variety of musical competitions from the 1920s through the present, focusing primarily on large-ensemble jazz in the Big Band and swing tradition. This class is available to students who have taken private lessons for at least one year, or participated in their middle school Band program. Jazz Band will perform at the Winter Concerts, the Spring Pops Concerts, the Performing Arts Assembly, and several festivals or adjudicated performances. 

8˚ This course is offered outside of the 8:20-2:30pm school day.

Orchestra (Intermediate)

Grade Level – 9, 10, 11, 12
Length – One Semester (offered during regular school day pending adequate enrollment)
First Semester Taken: Orchestra A (9801)
Subsequent Semesters: Orchestra B (9802)

Type of Course – Elective satisfying one semester of Fine Arts graducation requirement
Prerequisite – Participation in middle school orchestra program, or private lessons for at least one year
Criteria for Enrollment – None

Course Description - Intermediate orchestra is the entry-level course for students who participated in their middle school orchestra or band program. Students continue their studies on string, wind, brass and percussion instruments with intermediate exercises in tone production, rhythm, intonation, breathing, and musicianship. The Intermediate Orchestra performs repertoire from MENC grades 2-4, and will combine with the 8th period Orchestra for several pieces at the Fall and Spring Instrumental Music Concerts. The Intermediate Orchestra performs works from the baroque, classical, romantic and 20th century repertoires, and will perform at the CMEA festival in the spring.

NOTE: This class is offered during the regular school day only, so to take orchestra freshmen year, 9th grade students must create a free period in their schedule by taking 0-period biology.

Orchestra (Advanced - 8th Period)

Length – One Semester, offered 8th period ONLY
First Semester Taken: Orchestra A (9801)
Subsequent Semesters: Orchestra B (9802)

Type of Course – Elective satisfying one semester of Fine Arts graducation requirement
Prerequisite – Participation in middle school orchestra program, or private lessons for at least one year
Criteria for Enrollment – None

Course Description – This is the advanced orchestra for which an audition is required to participate. Auditions are held at the beginning of Fall Semester, and again in December for the following Spring Semester. Students develop technical mastery in all aspects of ensemble playing, including tone production, intonation, rhythmic execution, and musicianship. The Advanced Orchestra performs works from the baroque, classical, romantic and 20th century repertoire from MENC grades 4-5, and will perform at the CMEA festival in the spring. It is possible that in the Spring, 8th period orchestra may become the Spring Musical Orchestra, rehearsing several evenings per week instead of the regular Monday-Wednesday afternoon practices. Students receive their Fine Arts credit for taking this course.

AP Music Theory (Advanced - 8th Period)

Grade Level – 9, 10, 11, 12
Length – One Semester
