Band

We are fortunate to have three different bands at SI: Jazz Band, Pep Band and Concert Band.
Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is a performance ensemble in the tradition of vintage jazz orchestras and dance bands, focusing on music from the 1930’s through the present day. We cover a multitude of styles, including swing, bossa nova, funk, and rock fusion. The instrumentation consists of saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm section. We have two main performances each year, at the Winter and Spring Pops Concerts, as well as occasional trips and adjudicated festivals.
Jazz Band is offered each semester, and rehearses twice per week, Tuesday and Thursday 3-5 p.m. Enrollment in this class is by audition only, and depends on the instrumental requirements of the ensemble. It is available to students who have participated in their middle school Band program or taken private lessons for at least one year. Students are expected to practice their instruments outside of class.
Pep Band

The Pep Band’s job is to bring energy and excitement! Whether it’s a home game or a pep rally, we play the best tunes and most recognizable jams to get people pumped up about SI. Featuring tons of winds, brass, and drums, the Pep Band works closely with Wildcat Nation, Dance & Drill, and the entire student section to make every game and gathering as hype as possible!
Pep Band is offered during Fall semester, and rehearses twice per week, Tuesday and Thursday 8-8:50 a.m. Enrollment in this class is by audition only, and depends on the instrumental requirements of the ensemble. It is available to students who have participated in their middle school Band program or taken private lessons for at least one year. Students are expected to practice their instruments outside of class.
Concert Band
The Concert Band focuses on concert music in the classical tradition, from earlier composers like Holst and Granger, to present day writers like Pinkzebra. The instrumentation consists of woodwinds, like clarinet, flute, and saxophone; brass, like trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba; and percussion, like snare drum, bass drum, marimba, and timpani. We have one main performance each year, at the Spring Pops Concert, as well as occasional trips and adjudicated festivals.
Concert Band is offered during Spring semester, and rehearses twice per week, Tuesday and Thursday 8-8:50 a.m. Enrollment in this class is by audition only, and depends on the instrumental requirements of the ensemble. It is available to students who have participated in their middle school Band program or taken private lessons for at least one year. Students are expected to practice their instruments outside of class.

About Band Director Galen Green

I graduated cum laude from Cornish College of the Arts with a bachelorʼs degree in Music. I have performed with world-renowned musicians such as the Temptations, The Four Tops, and Tito Puente, Jr, toured nationally and internationally, been featured on many studio recordings and major-market commercial advertisements, and played in pit orchestras, cruise ships, circus shows, and bands of just about every style. I have 18 years of experience teaching saxophone, clarinet, and flute lessons to aspiring musicians of all ages and levels, and six years directing bands in K-12 public and private schools. I strive to share my own passion for music with students, to teach them to listen with open ears and minds, and to instill in them a curiosity for music that will last a lifetime.
My parents give me endless encouragement, support, and inspiration, and I owe them each my deepest love and gratitude. I was also incredibly fortunate to study with the great jazz saxophonist Hadley Caliman, whose influence has shaped my life in music.
