Celebrating 50 Years of the St. Ignatius Black Students Union

50 Years! The St. Ignatius Black Students Union celebrated 50 years with a sold-out crowd at the BSU Showcase on Feb. 26, 2022. The Carlin Commons was full of energy, joy and applause throughout the night, as BSU students performed spoken word, poetry, music and student-choreographed dances.

Dr. Tasia Davis and Mr. Darius White, co-moderators of the current Black Students Union, dedicated a portion of the showcase to some of our trailblazing alumni, Mr. Timothy Simon ’73, Mr. Jerome Williams ’75 and Mr. Burl Toler ’74, who courageously founded the St. Ignatius Black Students Union in 1972. Along with the current BSU students, Dr. Davis and Mr. White announced the creation of the annual Black Excellence Award, which will be awarded to an alumnus of the Black Students Union at the showcase beginning in 2023.

All of our incredibly talented and dedicated BSU alumni were called on stage and met with a standing ovation from the crowd — a testament to their hard work during their years at SI and their continued work supporting the BSU students of today.
