Tech Orientation and iPad Workshop
July 27, 2020 Update:
Below you will find information about SI's Online Tech Orientation for ninth graders and transfer students who have not yet completed online orientation.
We had originally planned for a physical letter mailed to your home, but many of you shared how email was a better format, so we have enclosed that information here.
Online Tech Orientation:
Below is a link to an online course that contains essential information to help ninth graders get oriented with technology they will need in the first weeks of school. The course is self-paced, with an exit survey to assess what they learned at the end of the course.
Students can access that course here:
*They do not need a login for the course. By design the course is asynchronous and self-paced, so they have control over learning pace and time.
Mandatory Zoom Meeting for Activation of SI Gmail Account (*meeting is only for students who have not yet activated their SI email account or have questions about the online course) :
Additionally, each student must attend an upcoming Zoom meeting offered on these dates:
- July 31, Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
- August 5, Wednesday, 6-7 p.m.
- August 7, Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
where they will activate their SI gmail account. The activation meeting will be brief and should not take the full hour. During that time they can also ask any tech-related questions. It is advised that students complete the online course before they attend the Zoom meeting, so they can prepare their questions for us.

When will I get my email regarding the online orientation?
All incoming ninth grade students will receive digital communication sent to them with information about the online tech training before the start of school on Aug. 21. We had initially planned for a physical letter but received input that email is a better option . We plan to onboard students by cohorts to ensure we have enough pacing time to assist each group through online orientation. All 9th grade parents should receive an email by Monday, Aug. 10, which will have all the information they need in order to complete the technology orientation and get access to their SI student gmail account.
What if we don't get our letter by Aug. 10?
Please reach out to us if you do not receive an email by that date. We will do our best to onboard each ninth grader before the start of school.
What is the timing of the online orientation? Do I have to sign up for a date? Is it a live Zoom Meeting?
There is no sign up needed for this online orientation. The online orientation has two components.
- a two hour self-paced online course
- mandatory Zoom meetings to activate your student's SI gmail account and for those who have questions about the online course
The format is online and asynchronous which means students will walk through the online course at their own pace and complete the course in their own time. They can log into the course when they want and when it works for them. There is a mandatory live Zoom meeting for students so we can walk them through activation of their gmail account and for students who need extra help. Dates of the live Zoom meetings will be shared in the email you will receive. If students are unable to make the live zoom meetings, please let us know and we can arrange for another time that best accommodates your schedule. All students are encouraged to complete the self-paced course before the start of school on August 21.
My child has summer school which starts on June 15. Will my ninth grader get tech training before the June 15 start date?

We are having issues with Wifi and I'm concerned my child won't be able to walk through this online orientation
If you are having issues with WiFi, please note that this online course is not a live stream course. Your child can walk through the course at any time and at their own pace. We are also sensitive to those who have issues with streaming live video and we have designed the course so it is not live. There will also be links to text instructions as well so there is no need to download heavy files. There is access to live Zoom meetings for students who need help but these Zoom meetings are completely optional. If you cannot access Zoom, you can also reach out to us via email or by phone.
