Tech Orientation and iPad Workshop
May 18, 2020 Update:
In light of social distancing guidelines, we have decided to cancel the in-person August Tech Orientations for ninth graders.
We are shifting to an online orientation using a combination of an online course and office hours via Zoom for students who need real time support.
We are working to ensure that the online course will have everything your ninth grader will need for technology use in the first weeks of school. The two-hour online course will cover instruction on widely used iPads apps, navigation of our learning management system (Canvas), and strategies for balancing workflows and troubleshooting. Most of all, the course will have an overview of all the resources on campus available for students to succeed with tech at SI and at home.
The course will be designed so that students can walk through the modules at their own pace. They will also have access to Zoom office hours, for real time support, if they need it. If you are experiencing issues with wifi, please let us know. We will ensure that we have support available for students via phone, if needed.
We are continuing to iron out the design of the online course but wanted to let you know about the shift in the August plans.
What to expect this summer?
Students will receive a letter in the mail regarding how to access the Online Tech Orientation. In that letter, we will also share how they can access their SI email account. The plan is to ensure all incoming ninth graders receive this information before the start of school. In the meantime, if you have questions about iPad requirements we have for students, you can get more information here. Please reach out and let us know if you are concerned about mail getting lost or you are currently unable to receive mail at the address we have on file. We will find a secure alternative to send you that information.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you and we look forward to meeting our future wildcats!

When will I get my letter regarding the online orientation?
All incoming ninth grade students will receive digital communication sent to them with information about the online tech training before the start of school on Aug. 21. We had initially planned for a physical letter but received input that email is a better option . We plan to onboard students by cohorts to ensure we have enough pacing time to assist each group through online orientation. All 9th grade parents should receive an email by Monday, Aug. 10, which will have all the information they need in order to complete the technology orientation and get access to their SI student gmail account.
What if we don't get our letter by Aug. 10?
Please reach out to us if you do not receive an email by that date. We will do our best to onboard each ninth grader before the start of school.
What is the timing of the online orientation? Do I have to sign up for a date? Is it a live Zoom Meeting?
There is no sign up needed for this online orientation. The online orientation has two components.
- a two hour online course
- optional Zoom meetings for those who need real time support
The format is online and asynchronous which means students will walk through the online course at their own pace and complete the course in their own time. They can log into the course when they want and when it works for them. There are optional live Zoom meetings only for students who need extra help. Dates of the live Zoom meetings will be shared in the online course. All students are encouraged to complete the course before the start of school, Aug. 21.
My child has summer school which starts on June 15. Will my ninth grader get tech training before the June 15 start date?
Yes. Please review the letter sent to all ninth grade parents who have students in summer school here: https://bit.ly/2YggOqD.
We are having issues with Wifi and I'm concerned my child won't be able to walk through this online orientation
If you are having issues with WiFi, please note that this online course is not a live stream course. Your child can walk through the course at any time and at their own pace. We are also sensitive to those who have issues with streaming live video and we have designed the course so it is not live. There will also be links to text instructions as well so there is no need to download heavy files. There is access to live Zoom meetings for students who need help but these Zoom meetings are completely optional. If you cannot access Zoom, you can also reach out to us via email or by phone. Dir. of Ed Tech & Innovation, Jennifer Gaspar-Santos, email@example.com; and Director of IT, Jamie Pruden, firstname.lastname@example.org. Phone 1(415) 731-7500 ext. 5225 or ext 5580. If you have any other issues with connectivity at home and are concerned about distance learning next year, please also reach out.
I still have questions and would like to speak someone in Tech?
Please let us know if you have any other Ed Tech-related questions. Dir. of Ed Tech & Innovation, Jennifer Gaspar-Santos, email@example.com; and Director of IT, Jamie Pruden, firstname.lastname@example.org. Phone 1(415) 731-7500 ext. 5225 or ext 5580.
