Tech Orientation

Dear Parents/Guardians of incoming 9th Graders,

First and foremost, welcome to SI! We hope you are all healthy and safe and are very excited about returning to campus in August. We are here to give the 9th graders a head start with the tech tools they’ll be using in the fall. SI uses a Learning Management System called Canvas to deliver course content to each student.  Some of you may already be familiar with this system while others will need help getting started.  That is where we come in.  Rising 9th graders are expected to take care of a few items prior to using the technology that is standard to an academic day at SI.  While most of this will be centered around the iPad and certain recommended apps for school, we recommend for this orientation that you use a laptop or desktop.

Students who are currently attending our Rising 9th grade summer program do not need this orientation but are welcome to attend any of the zoom sessions if they are having trouble accessing their SI accounts.

Prior to the first day of classes on August 20, each student must:

  • Attend one 60 minute zoom orientation.  In order to accommodate your summer schedules, we will be offering them on the dates and times below.  I will email the link to you early next week.  In order to best serve those attending the meeting, we will stop admitting attendants after the first ten minutes.
  • Complete the Tech Orientation Course which can take from 45-90 minutes depending on their level of experience with the technology they will be using.

If you have not yet used Zoom, the first part of the course shows how to set it up (which means that if the last year has given you enough practice, you can skip that part of the course 🥳).  Please note that some of the modules do have assignments attached that are required in order to complete the course.

Dates and times for the Tech Orientation Zoom Meetings:

When will I get my email regarding the online orientation?

All incoming ninth grade students will receive digital communication sent to them with information about the online tech training before the start of school on Aug. 21. We had initially planned for a physical letter but received input that email is a better option . We plan to onboard students by cohorts to ensure we have enough pacing time to assist each group through online orientation. All 9th grade parents should receive an email by Monday, Aug. 10, which will have all the information they need in order to complete the technology orientation and get access to their SI student gmail account.

What if we don't get our letter by Aug. 10?

Please reach out to us if you do not receive an email by that date. We will do our best to onboard each ninth grader before the start of school.

What is the timing of the online orientation? Do I have to sign up for a date? Is it a live Zoom Meeting?

There is no sign up needed for this online orientation. The online orientation has two components.

  • a two hour self-paced online course
  • mandatory Zoom meetings to activate your student's SI gmail account and for those who have questions about the online course

The format is online and asynchronous which means students will walk through the online course at their own pace and complete the course in their own time. They can log into the course when they want and when it works for them. There is a mandatory live Zoom meeting for students so we can walk them through activation of their gmail account and for students who need extra help. Dates of the live Zoom meetings will be shared in the email you will receive. If students are unable to make the live zoom meetings, please let us know and we can arrange for another time that best accommodates your schedule. All students are encouraged to complete the self-paced course before the start of school on August 21.

My child has summer school which starts on June 15. Will my ninth grader get tech training before the June 15 start date?

Yes. Please review the letter sent to all ninth grade parents who have students in summer school here: https://bit.ly/2YggOqD.

We are having issues with Wifi and I'm concerned my child won't be able to walk through this online orientation

If you are having issues with WiFi, please note that this online course is not a live stream course. Your child can walk through the course at any time and at their own pace. We are also sensitive to those who have issues with streaming live video and we have designed the course so it is not live. There will also be links to text instructions as well so there is no need to download heavy files. There is access to live Zoom meetings for students who need help but these Zoom meetings are completely optional. If you cannot access Zoom, you can also reach out to us via email or by phone.  Dir. of Ed Tech & Innovation, Jennifer Gaspar-Santos, jsantos@siprep.org; and Director of IT, Jamie Pruden, jprduen@siprep.org.  Phone 1(415) 731-7500 ext. 5225 or ext 5580. If you have any other issues with connectivity at home and are concerned about distance learning next year, please also reach out.

I still have questions and would like to speak someone in Tech?

Please let us know if you have any other Ed Tech-related questions. Dir. of Ed Tech & Innovation, Jennifer Gaspar-Santos, jsantos@siprep.org; and Director of IT, Jamie Pruden, jprduen@siprep.org. Phone 1(415) 731-7500 ext. 5225 or ext 5580.

Which iPad should I purchase for my child?
