Sports Camps 2010

General Info:  Campers should report to their specific sports camp early on the first day of camp to check in and receive a T-shirt. Please bring a healthy snack and drink each day for breaks. We advise a hat and sunscreen for the outdoor camps.

A.M. Camp: Morning Camp: "Streets of San Francisco " Grades 1 - 6 (as of fall 2010); 9 am - noon

What: Campers in the Morning Camp will learn and participate in a variety of sports activities each week. Everyone will participate in the weekly arts and crafts projects. There will be three different activities per day. All campers are grouped according to age. In addition, campers will see the sites of San Francisco on this camp's weekly field trip. The field trip schedule will be posted prior to the start of camp. Some of our past field trips have included: Coit Tower & Lombard Street, Presidio Bowling & Crissy Field, San Francisco Zoo, Ice Skating & Yerba Buena Gardens and The Exploratorium & Palace of Fine Arts.


Where: Parents must sign-in their children at the South Gym (McCullough Gym) each day between 8:45 and 9:00 in the South Gym. If your child is going to free early drop-off at 8 a.m., s/he must sign in with the proctor of early drop-off. Please let Mr. Hickox know if your child will be going to early drop-off. If your child is signed up for an afternoon camp he or she will be supervised during lunch (12:00 to 12:45) and then escorted to their next camp. All campers must be signed-out each day starting at 12:00 noon.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers are asked to bring enough nutritious snacks for the 2 breaks they will have during the day. Vending machines are available, so you may want to send your child with money. Campers should dress for physical activity, tennis shoes are required.

A.M. Camp: Training for the High School Athlete: Boys & Girls entering 9th grade (as of fall 2010) ; 9 am - noon (not limited to SI students)

What: The two 2-week sessions are designed to physically prepare promising high school athletes for upcoming seasons. Instruction and activities geared for training the athlete in various aspects of strength and conditioning. Activities include: free weights, machines, Olympic lifting techniques, sprint techniques, stretching variations, and basic plyometrics. The two 2 week sessions can also be taken as a four week continuous camp.

Where: SI Weight Room located next to the upper field underneath the gym.

Clothing & Equipment: Athletic shoes, loose fitting sweats and/or shorts, a T-shirt and/or sweat shirt. Camp is conducted both inside and outside. Sunscreen is advised.


Baseball Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: Instruction will emphasize hitting, bunting, base running, pitching, and defensive play at all positions.

Where: Report to the bleachers near the football field on the first day of camp.  

Clothing & Equipment: Campers will receive a baseball cap but need to wear a shirt/sweatshirt, baseball pants or sweats, baseball or other athletic shoes, & glove.  Bats will be available for use during the day, but campers might feel more comfortable with their own bat.  Make sure that any personal gear is clearly marked with name or initials.  Don't bring baseballs; we'll have plenty available. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Basketball Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: Sessions combine fundamental stations, fundamental demonstrations, league play, 3 on 3 blacktop tournament contests, and lectures on time management and how to be a team player.

Where: Come to the main gym on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: All campers must have basketball shoes, shorts, and socks. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Cat Camp: 9 am - 3:30 pm; June 14 - June 18; Coed camp for incoming SI freshmen Class of 2014

What: All day (9 am - 3:30 pm) one-week camp for members of the Class of 2014. This camp provides the incoming freshmen with the opportunity to meet their classmates and get to know the campus. Each day the campers participate in three activities. This year's three scheduled sessions each day are girls' and boys' basketball, strength and conditioning and studio art. At least one of those sessions will be coed each day. On Friday afternoon there will be a social event for all campers.

Where: Meet in the foyer of the main gym on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Dress for two sports camps per day. Bring a large shirt or T-shirt to use during the studio art session of the camp. Campers will receive a special Cat Camp 2014 shirt.

Lunch: Lunch will be provided each day and is included in the price of the camp.


Crew Camp: 8:30 - 1 pm; June 14 - June 18; Coed camp for 7th and 8th graders only (as of fall 2010)

What: A skills-oriented camp covering the basic techniques of crew. Camp will be held rain or shine. There will be both land and water workouts done on both erg machines and crew shells. Depending on the weather, campers may be bussed to St. Ignatius to work on additional erg machines. Please complete and sign the Crew Camp Summer Permission Slip (to be posted here prior to the start of camp) and bring it with you to the first day of camp. Thank you!

Where: Meet at the Lake Merced Boathouse.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers should wear work-out gear. Appropriate layered clothing is recommended for different weather conditions. Pack a cap, sunscreen,water bottle and snack each day. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.

Lunch: Lunch will be provided each day and is included in the price of the camp.


Cross Country Camp: 1 - 3 pm

What: Designed to help athletes of all levels prepare for the fall Cross Country season.  Runners will be grouped by fitness and ability level.  Classroom instruction will supplement the afternoon workouts.

Where: On the first day you will meet in the bleachers on the football field. On subsequent days you will meet on 39th Ave. behind the west bleachers in order to board the SI school bus. Each day of running will feature a different location: various locations in Golden Gate Park, Crissy Field, and Land's End. The campers will board the SI school bus and travel to one of these destinations in order to vary running venues. Please complete and sign the Cross Country Camp Summer Venues Permission Slip (to be posted prior to the start of camp) and bring it with you to the first day of camp. Thank you!

Clothing & Equipment: Every runner should have good running shoes, socks, shorts, T-shirt, and sweats.  Bring a water bottle and snack every day. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Field Hockey Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: A skills-oriented camp covering the basic techniques of field hockey. 

Where: Meet at the bleachers by the football field on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers may wear tennis shoes or cleats (soccer cleats are ok; baseball spikes are not).  Please wear shorts or sweats. Bring a hockey stick if you have one, if not, one will be loaned to you. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Football Camp: 1 - 4 pm; Session 1 for Grades 5-7 & Session 2 for Grades 8-9

What: Instruction will cover the fundamentals of football including throwing, kicking, tackling, catching, blocking, proper stances, and defensive covering.  All blocking and tackling are done with padded bags to concentrate on form.  There is no player-to-player contact.

Where: Meet in the bleachers in front of the press box on the first day. 

Clothing & Equipment: Campers may wear tennis shoes or cleats (soccer cleats are ok; baseball spikes are not).  Please wear shorts or sweats. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Golf Camp: 1 - 4 pm; two-week camp (Campers will board the bus at 12:15 each day)

What: Wildcat Golf Camp will offer two weeks of instruction and challenging competition at local golf facilities and courses. Coaches, with licensed teaching professionals, will teach skills for the beginning, intermediate, and advanced golfers. Campers will travel to various Bay Area golf practice facilities, but will begin and end their days at St. Ignatius. Please complete and sign the Golf Camp Summer Venues Permission Slip (to be posted prior to the start of camp) and bring it with you to the first day of camp. Thank you!

Where: Meet in the bleachers in front of the press box on the first day.  Campers will board a bus each day at 12:15 in order to travel to a practice facility. Check this website for complete travel schedule prior to the start of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Each golfer should have a full set of clubs, a golf glove, and a pair of soft golf spikes. If you are in the academic program or a morning camp, bring your gear to the Summer Programs office for storage each morning. Pack a lunch to eat on the way to camp, in addition to a snack and a drink for each day. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Boys' Lacrosse Session 1: 1 - 4 pm

What: This camp is designed for boys with little or no lacrosse experience. The camp will not use nor does it require the camper to have a helmet or pads. In fact, no pads will be used during this session. The camp will focus on fitness and the basic skills necessary to play lacrosse. Boys will learn how to catch, throw, cradle, shoot, and play defense using body position. They will learn the different positions in lacrosse in order to develop a further interest in the game.

: Meet at the bleachers by the football field on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers may wear tennis shoes or cleats (soccer cleats are ok; baseball spikes are not).  Please wear shorts or sweats. Please bring a lacrosse stick. SI has a limited number of loaner lacrosse sticks. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.

Boys' Lacrosse Camp Session 2: 1 - 4 pm (For experienced players)

What: This camp is designed for boys who have had experience playing lacrosse. Campers MUST have their own equipment including a stick, helmet, mouth piece, gloves, elbow pads, and shoulder pads. Goalies must have equipment specific to their position. The camp will focus on further developing the campers understanding of the game, body positioning, field positioning, and offensive and defensive strategies. 

Where: Meet at the bleachers by the football field on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers MUST have their own equipment including a stick, helmet, mouth piece, gloves, elbow pads, and shoulder pads. Goalies must have equipment specific to their position. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Girls' Lacrosse Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: This camp is designed for girls with little or no lacrosse experience. The camp will not use nor does it require the camper to have a helmet or pads. In fact, no pads will be used during this session. The camp will focus on fitness and the basic skills necessary to play lacrosse. Girls will learn how to catch, throw, cradle, shoot, and play defense using body position. They will learn the different positions in lacrosse in order to develop a further interest in the game.

Olympic Weightlifting Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: This unique camp introduces the camper to the world of competitive weightlifting where they will learn the Snatch and Clean and Jerk movements. Instruction will incorporate video analysis of top world lifters and of each camper. Olympic variations will also be incorporated throughout camp. Guest speakers and coaches’ demonstrations will be a high point of each day’s program. Weight class competitions will be included on the final day of camp. (All instruction will begin with 15 pound bars, and no lifter will attempt a weight without demonstrating proficiency in the movement with a lighter weight.)

Where: Meet at the new weight room daily.

Clothing & Equipment: Please wear sweats or shorts and T-shirt. Bring an extra T-shirt and sweatshirt. Wear athletic shoes and socks. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Soccer Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: A skills-oriented camp covering the basic techniques of soccer.

Where: Meet at the SI press box, located in the bleachers by the athletic field.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers must bring their own soccer ball. The ball size is very important: under age 8 (size 3), under 12 (size 4), under 16 (size 5). Shinguards recommended. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Softball Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: Softball camp will focus on developing individual skills and techniques in such areas as: Throwing - Hitting - Fielding.  Daily instruction will provide proper technique and skills progression to help all campers improve their skills.

Where: Campers should meet on the upper practice field on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Campers will need to have their own glove, a small snack and water each day. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Tennis Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: Instruction and drills on the fundamental strokes including forehand, backhand, volleys and serves. Campers will have the opportunity to play both single and double sets, plus games.

Where: SI tennis courts above the parking lot (located at the corner of 37th Avenue & Rivera)

Clothing & Equipment: Wear tennis shoes and shorts (weather permitting). Campers must bring a tennis racket. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Track & Field Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: Campers will experience all the track and field events from the 100 meter dash to the mile and from the high jump to the discus throw. Campers will compete in a track meet at the end of the week.

Where: Meet in the bleachers by the track and football field.

Clothing & Equipment: Running shoes and shorts or sweats. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.


Volleyball Camp: 1 - 4 pm

What: Instruction & drills focus on the fundamental skills of passing, setting, hitting, serving, blocking and digging.  A major portion of the camp will be playing games.

Where: Meet in the gym on the first day of camp.

Clothing & Equipment: Wear athletic shoes (volleyball shoes, cross trainers or court shoes) and shorts with a comfortable T-shirt. Kneepads are recommended. Please bring water and a daily snack. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.
