Job Description


for Professional Development Director

 

The Professional Development Program Administrator will be a full-time12-month position.  The Professional Development Director will administer the St. Ignatius Faculty Development Program.  He/she shall chair the Professional Development Committee and will report to the Assistant Principal for Academics.  Since all teachers, counselors, and administrators are expected to engage in Professional Development, he/she will work closely with the entire staff.

 

Among the duties of the Director of Professional Development will be the following:

 

Whole-School Projects

 

The Director of Professional Development will chair the Professional Development Committee, which will administer the Professional Development Program, advise the Principal on Professional Development goals for the school and assess the progress and direction of the Professional Development Program.

 

The Professional Development Director will work with local public school districts to obtain No Child Left Behind funding.  The director will work with the Department of Catholic Schools, universities, other schools, professional organizations, including the JSEA and NCEA, businesses, and individuals who can offer to our faculty and staff various curriculum and professional development resources.

 

The Professional Development Director will administer professional development programs on teaching, learning, leadership, technology training, Summer Curriculum Grants, the Sabbatical Program, and will work closely with the Assistant Principal for Academics to ensure a coordinated and coherent curriculum development program.

 

The Professional Development Director, working with the Professional Development Committee will meet the Campus Ministry Staff, including the Adult Spirituality Director, to coordinate programs and services and plan to enhance the religious and Ignatian aspects of the school.

 

Faculty Development Board

 

The Professional Development Director is a member of the Faculty Development Board and provides major administrative support.  While a faculty member appointed by the Principal chairs this Board, the Professional Development Director has a number of duties on this board specific to his office:

 

All faculty applying for tenure for the first time and renewal thereafter meet first with the Professional Development Director to consult about the form and substance of their 5-year plan.  Within this structure the Professional Development Director can bring the full resources of this office to the process.

 

The Professional Development Director is charged with meeting with every faculty member who has been granted tenure at the midpoint of that term and ensuring that the plan written by that faculty member and approved by the Board is on track.

 

The Professional Development Director, in concert with the full Board, composes the Board’s letter of recommendation for tenure to the principal.

 

When teachers are given specific tasks by the FDB that require supervision and support, the Professional Development Director, along with the Assistant Principal for Academics, the faculty member, and the Department Chair will work together to develop and monitor the plan.  The Professional Development Director is the lead administrator in this process.

 

Focus on Learning Process and Midterm Report

 

The Professional Development Director, along with the Assistant Principal for Academics, will administer and coordinate the planning and implementation for the Focus on Learning and WASC Midterm accreditation process.

 

At the direction of the Principal, and working with the Assistant Principal for Academics, the Professional Development Director will carry out aspects of the Action Plan that develop from this process.

 

Excellence in Teaching Program

 

The Professional Development Director has the following duties in the Excellence in Teaching Program:

 

He/she will be a member of the Excellence in Teaching Team administering the Excellence in Teaching Program.

 

He/she will be responsible for matching faculty needs developing from this program with professional development resources and programs.   Examples include training for teaching and leadership, summer curriculum projects, course work and workshops, mentoring, and sabbaticals.

 

Department Planning

 

He/she and the Assistant Principal for Academics will meet formally at least once each semester with each department chair to discuss the needs and progress of each department's curriculum development planning process.  The Professional Development Director and the Assistant Principal for Academics will work together to assist, and if necessary, direct and supervise each department's professional and curriculum development process.

 

 

Work with Individuals

 

When requested by the faculty member, principal, assistant principal, or department chair, he/she will assist faculty with their professional development activities.

 

At the midpoint and at the beginning of each teacher's tenure term the Director of Professional Development will place in the teacher’s permanent file the teacher's written plan and an assessment of this faculty member’s progress in achieving his/her development goals.  The Principal and Assistant Principals may use these two evaluations in their end-of-the-year evaluation of each member of the professional staff.

 

He/she will meet with teachers during the summer and during the school year to assist that instructor in his/her professional development planning and with specific activities for the academic year.

 

The Director of Professional Development will work with department heads to ensure that professional development opportunities will be available to all teachers regardless of seniority, and that special care will be taken to encourage new teachers to avail themselves of these growth activities. Additionally, budget monies will be set aside for professional growth programs aimed at non-tenured teachers.

 

Mentoring Program

 

The Professional Development Director shall serve as a staff and resource person for the Mentoring Program.  He/she shall work closely with the Assistant Principal for Academics who administers the Mentoring Program.

 

Print, Video, Internet, and Software Resources

 

With the advice of department chairs and the faculty, the Director will purchase books and materials of all kinds to assist faculty in their professional development.

 

Summer Programs

 

In addition to summer duties described above, the Director of Professional Development will meet with other administrators and plan and develop programs. He/she will work with new teachers as directed by the Principal and Assistant Principal for Academics and attend workshops and programs to investigate and explore opportunities for development before recommending them to our professional staff.
