Vince Gotera is a Professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa, where he served as Editor of the North American Review. In August 2017, he will become Editor of Star*Line, the official journal of the international Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. Blog: The Man with the Blue Guitar http://vincegotera.blogspot.com where he is writing a poem a day throughout April for NaPoWriMo.

The following poem is written in hay(na)ku stanzas. The hay(na)ku is a tercet form with one word in line 1, two words in line 2, and three words in line 3 — a deceptively simple form that allows flexible expression in a small space. The poem retells family stories about Vince's baptism at St. Gabriel Church in the Sunset District.

saint gabriel morning

face
peeks out
cocooned blanket blue

mama
and papa
dressed to nines

simple
fur collar
dashing gray suit

baby
eyes squint
blanket peeled back

drizzle
water drops
forehead wet cold

laughing
priest says
look at him

gazing
round like
he sees angels

through
stained glass
sudden sun sparks

rose
sky blue
clear white light
