"Rowing into the Deep," the theme for the 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus in Rome, was inspired by Pope Francis' message to the Jesuits on the 200th anniversary of the restoration of the Society of Jesus. On September 27, 2014, in the Church of the Gesù in Rome, the pope urged Jesuits to discern in difficult times; to be receptive of and obedient to the will of God; and to row with him in the service of the church according to the call of Jesus to his disciples: "Put out into the deep."
For the combination of the California and Oregon Provinces of the Society of Jesus into JESUITS West (which happens this July), Jesuits ministries were asked to respond artistically to the ways we are invited to "row into the deep" — to set out from the comfort of our shores and cast our nets into deeper water. To respond to this invitation with generous hearts, we will need courage and trust, creativity and vision.
At SI, artists, dancers, videographers and musicians collaborated on this effort. Art teacher Katie Wolf created a mural at the entrance of the school to showcase the secondary schools in JESUITS West, and she asked students in her classes to create pieces dealing with waves and water. Dance instructor Meredith Cecchin Galvin '97 asked students in her dance class to choreograph and perform a piece at Ocean Beach responding to the theme. Photography teacher Carlos Gazulla and his students submitted photos that also responded to the theme. SITV Moderator Yosup Joo filmed all of these efforts and created this video. The soundtrack is "Oceans" by Hillsong, performed by seven members of the Class of 2016.
