May 29, 1931 - August 19, 2017

John D. Tivenan, age 86, passed peacefully at his home in Forestville on August 19, 2017. A native San Franciscan born to Irish immigrant parents, John graduated St. Ignatius high school in 1949 and promptly left to live his dream of living in Hawaii. From 1949-53, John lived on a sailboat in Waikiki and taught swimming at the Outrigger Hotel.

He completed his education at SFSU and met Jan Taylor at Marin Town and Country Club. They were married 35 years and raised 2 daughters until Jan's passing in 1992.

John taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade for the Burlingame School District. John and Jan bought their Russian River home on "magic mountain" in 1968. After their retirement, they spent winters at the Ilikai on Oahu.

In 1997, John married his second wife Jackie Renner whom he'd known since high school. They were lucky enough to find each other later in life. John and Jackie continued the tradition of spending winters in Hawaii until Jackie's passing in 2011.

John will be remembered for his witty Irish humor, his generosity and living life to the fullest.

John is preceded in death by grandson Mark R. McLean. John leaves his daughters Caryl Harrop, Kellie Nyholm (Mike), step children Pam Jones (Kevin), Lisa Fonseca (Jose), Brenda Armstrong (Jim), Tori Suarez and John Renner; grandchildren Mary McLean, Ryan McLean, Danielle Barrett and over 14 step grandchildren, also his beloved King Charles Cavalier, Charlie, who never left his side.

A very special thanks to all those who made it possible for John to live out his last days in his home.

At John's request, there will be no services.

Until we meet again

ALOHA!
