Resident of Martinez, CA

(1936 - 2017)

Raymond Gordon Paxton, Jr. 80, of Martinez, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7th, surrounded by his entire family. He is survived by his wife Virginia, daughters Lori (Vitti) and Kim (Moraga), son Greg Paxton, son-in-laws Tony Moraga and Allen Vitti, daughter-in-law Stacy Paxton, grandchildren Anthony and Tyler Moraga, Jamie and Drew Paxton. Allison Lokmor, Lauren Cameron, and her husband Brett Cameron. Ray is also survived by his sister Doris (Tennant) of Steamwood, Illinois.

He was a fourth generation San Franciscan, born in 1936 to Ray Paxton Sr. and Doris Frances (Holmes). Ray graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1954 where he was a four-year varsity standout in both basketball and baseball. Upon graduating from St. Ignatius, he signed with the Boston Red Sox and played one year in the Class A Arizona-Mexico League for the Las Vegas Wranglers. He then settled in San Francisco, where he met and married the love of his life, Virginia Dale Johnson, his wife of 55 years. It was here in San Francisco where he also worked for 30 years for the US Postal Service as a manager in the Accountable Paper division. But his favorite job was being a devoted family man and grandfather, a job he valued more than anything and one he loved with all his heart.

Throughout his life Ray had a deep passion for family and sports. He was a highly respected coach and devoted the majority of his adult years instilling both life and baseball lessons for many generations of kids and families within Continental Little League in Concord, Ca. It was here where he touched the hearts of many and met people that would go on to be lifelong friends. Ray will be deeply missed by all but he leaves a legacy in others that will last forever.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lafayette Park Hotel (3287 Mt Diablo Blvd, Lafayette, CA 94549) on August 6th from 11am to 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ray's favorite organization – Continental Little League. Please send contributions to Lori Vitti, 1155-C, Arnold Drive #121, Martinez, CA 94553.
