William (Bill) Ferree '63

January 7, 1945 – July 4, 2017

William (Bill) Ferree, 72 years old, died on July 4, 2017 at home in San Mateo, California. Bill was born on January 7, 1945 in San Francisco to Elmer and Cecile Ferree (Savage), the second of five children. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 45 years Trudy Ferree (Chenoweth), his daughter Kristine Ferree Drozd and his son in law Scott Drozd. He was the loving "Papa" to his grandchildren Danny and Klara Drozd all of Redding, Connecticut. He was the proud master of "Shakespeare" his companion beagle.

Bill was a third-generation San Franciscan and a member of the Eureka Valley association.

He graduated from Most Holy Redeemer (1959), St. Ignatius High School (1963) and the University of San Diego (1967). At St. Ignatius, he was a three-sport athlete playing basketball, baseball and football. After high school, he was awarded a scholarship and went on the play basketball for the University of San Diego Toreros.

Bill was a high school teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District for 38 years. He coached numerous sports including varsity basketball at Abraham Lincoln High School. Bill loved sports and was a member of the San Francisco Coach's and Old Timers Associations. He was an enthusiastic SF Giants fan and a member of the 49er faithful. He was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles watching Jeopardy each day.

Bill is survived by two sisters, Denise Goodwin of Sebastopol, CA and Missy Ferree Hunt and her husband Alan Hunt of Pacifica, CA. Bill was predeceased by his brothers Daniel

Ferree of San Jose, CA and Michael Ferree of San Francisco, CA. He is also survived by his brother in law, Thomas Chenoweth and his wife Lenore Fines of Lake Oswego, OR. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family wishes to especially thank his wonderful buddies Rick Boyle, Rudy Labrado, Gary Leal, and Billie Sheridan for all of their support. One of his classmates from St. Ignatius High School, Tom Brandi described Bill very well, "He had a legion of friends drawn by his honesty, warmth and gentle ways. He was one of the best athletes of his generation and a special friend to many. He will forever be Billy." Everyone agrees that Bill was an exceptionally genuine, fun and kind person. The family also expresses its gratitude to his physicians and caretakers at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco.

A funeral mass and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church (10:30 AM), 1310 Bayswater Ave., Burlingame, CA 94010. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers and other gifts, donations are requested in honor of William Ferree for the St. Ignatius High School Athletic Department (Advancement Office), 2001 37th Ave., San Francisco, CA and/or the University of San Diego Torero's men's basketball team, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA 92110.
