William Michael Shaughnessy, 83, passed away at his home in San Mateo, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in 1933 to Jerald & Delia Shaughnessy in San Francisco, the youngest of 7 children. He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School in 1951. Bill served in the Army during the Korean War. He met his lovely bride Joan in 1956, and they married in 1957 in San Francisco. In 1956, Bill started a dedicated career in the San Francisco Fire Department. He served for 37 years and retired as an Assistant Chief In 1994. Bill loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved all sports and was an avid golfer. He's been able to golf his age for the last 10 years. He was a silver master bridge player and he spent the last 16 years volunteering his time teaching bridge at St. Bartholomew's Church. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1112 since 1973. He was a generous, hardworking and honorable man. Bill is preceded in death by his son Danny. He is survived by his wife Joan of nearly 60 years, his 4 children MaryAnn (Max), Dennis (Melinda), Pat (Jim) Jeanne (Drew), his 10 grandchildren Alison (Timmy), Eileen, Heidi (Ryan), Sean, Sarah, Emily, Megan, Kate, Danny, Lucy, and his 3 great-grandchildren Ian, Nautica, Hannah and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please contribute money to the charity of your choice. Funeral services will be held at St Bartholomew's Catholic Church in San Mateo on June 19th at 10:00 AM.
