John Allen Meany, long time San Carlos resident, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2017, at age 76. John is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Irene "Raggs" Meany, and his daughters Kathy, Karen, and Kelly, sons in law Kent Fagliano and Joe Campagna, and grandchildren Stephanie, Sabrina, Megan, Joey, Sheila and family.
John was born in San Francisco to parents John and Margaret Meany. He attended St. Agnes Grammar School and Saint Ignatius High School, class of 1958. He then went on to SF City College before serving in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves for 8 years. He married Raggs, his high school sweetheart in 1961 and the couple had 4 children, including Michele, who passed away at 16 months of age.
John and Irene moved to San Carlos in 1964. In 1965, he bought his first grocery store, the San Carlos Food Center, and went on to build John's Valley Foods in Portola Valley. He was also owner of John's Town and Country Market in Palo Alto and John's Midtown Market in Los Altos. John was deeply involved with the Northern CA Grocers Association, where he served as President and Chairman of the Board. He also held a position of leadership on several other boards, including the Homeowners Association in Lake Tahoe--on which he served until his passing--and was an active member of such groups as ICF, SIRS and "The Family" of San Francisco/Woodside.
John was happiest spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed working in the yard, coaching youth basketball, playing Keno, slots, cards and going on many fishing and hunting trips with his buddies from Harrah's. John was known for his generous nature, his love for animals, and his ability to tell a great story. He was a man of faith and an active parishioner of St. Charles Catholic Church for 53 years. In addition to his immediate family, he will be dearly missed by his sisters in law, brother in law, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday March 17th at 6pm and continue until the Vigil Service at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday March 18th at 10:30am. All services will be held at St. Charles Church, 880 Tamarack Ave., San Carlos.
The family wishes to thank Sequoia Hospital for all the wonderful care John received. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's memory to St. Charles Catholic Church and/or School in San Carlos, as well as Society of St. Vincent de Paul-St. Charles Conference c/o St. Charles Church.
