John Richard Stone '56
Posted 02/13/2017 10:10AM

May 9, 1938 – Feb. 6. 2017

In 1971, when his children were five, three, and two, John Stone's wife, Rosemary Cecilia Stone, passed away after a valiant battle against cancer. Despite the hardships of being a single dad, "Pa" worked to ensure that his family stayed together in California, passing up opportunities that would have required him to relocate. In 1975, he married the second love of his life, Nancy Bedell Stone, and they had 34 wonderful years together until her passing in 2009.

On Monday, John passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Born in San Francisco's Sunset District, John is survived by his children Robert, Trish, and Mike, he was a wonderful friend to their spouses Adéla, Mike, and Jennifer, and he was a cherished Grandpa to Andrew, Emily, Jack, Logan, Payton, Ned, Lauren, and Caitlin.

John attended St. Ignatius High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from USF. He worked for many years in the insurance industry, first at Travelers and then at CNA, until his retirement in 2005. Dad loved to cook, travel, paint, and challenge his mind. His wit, humor, strength, and love will be sorely missed. He was a hero to his children every single day.

Catholic Mass in memory of John will be held February 16 at St. John Vianney Church in Walnut Creek at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa County. Leave condolences at www.oakparkhillschapel.com
