Arrupe Fund and Program
Named for Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Father General of the Society of Jesus, 1965–1983Rev. Pedro Arrupe, one of the Society of Jesus’ greatest generals, challenged a 1973 gathering of Jesuit alumni to become “men for others” and invited them “to work with others toward the dismantling of unjust social structures.” With the Arrupe Fund, SI hopes to further that mission. In 2011, Rev. Robert T. Walsh, S.J. '68, announced the goal of creating a $5 million Arrupe Fund to help students pay not only for tuition but also for some of the other costs associated with high school. As many parents are aware, the complete "SI experience" includes additional out-of-pocket expenses associated with full participation in student life at the school.
Q - WHAT IS THE ARRUPE PROGRAM?
A – It will assist students with non-tuition costs associated with attending SI, from events, activities, and trips occurring within Academics, Co-Curriculars and Campus Ministry. The office of financial assistance will confidentially administer this non-tuition assistance.
Q – WHO WILL BE HELPED?
A – Once fully funded, all students receiving 55 percent or more in tuition assistance will be included automatically in the program. Other families receiving aid may also request assistance for unexpected expenses and additional costs related to attending St. Ignatius.
Q - WHAT IS THE GOAL?
A - We hope to establish a $5 million endowment to provide a total of $200,000 in non-tuition assistance annually. In 2014-2015, the program served well over 150 students.
Q - WHY AN ENDOWMENT FUND?
A - An endowment fund is designed to provide annual assistance and keep pace with inflation and increased tuition. When down economic cycles occur and annual donations tighten, SI’s endowment fund will ensure assistance for SI families in need. SI invests its endowment funds with Makena Capital of Menlo Park.
