Why Study Chinese?

There are some good reasons for studying Chinese. You might think of some others…..

Learning Chinese can open up a big, new world to you.

China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, over 6000 years old. By studying Chinese, students will develop an appreciation for Chinese culture and history.

Learning Chinese lets us see the world through fresh eyes.

Leaning a second language develops critical and creative thinking skills. 

 

Learning Chinese help you build friendships with Chinese people all over the world

China is the most populous country in the world with over 1.4 billion people. Mandarin is spoken in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, The Philippines, and Mongolia.

 

China is playing a major role in world affairs and will continue to do so.

China has the second largest economy in the world. With the rapid growth of China, it is playing a major role in world affairs. 

Opportunities for individuals that are fluent in the Chinese language will only increase

Knowing Chinese will allow students to compete effectively in the global economy of the future, and may be an edge when competing for a job.  The demand for business people who know Chinese is skyrocketing. 

About the Teachers:
 

Mrs. Irene Wong has been teaching Mandarin in colleges and high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 10 years. She joined SI to start the Mandarin program in 2011-12. She has a MA in Chinese, and California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mandarin. She is married with two daughters.

Mrs. Leona Pappas joined SI in 2014. She has a Computer Science degree in China, a BA and California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mandarin at San Francisco State University. Currently she is teaching Mandarin 2, Mandarin 2H and Mandarin 3H.
