Athletes in the News
After tens of thousands of rolls of tape, one million cubic feet of crushed ice, and many friendships developed in the training room, Marla Bottner is stepping down as the full-time athletic trainer at St. Ignatius. It's hard to believe that only 30 years ago, former Athletic Director, Leo LaRocca, offered Marla a full-time training position in the Fall of 1989 for a one-hundred dollar bill! In that time, Marla has been a pioneer in high school athletic training and a fixture on the numerous sidelines of the St. Ignatius Wildcats.
Under Marla's leadership, the athletic training staff grew to 3 total positions, she coordinated and developed a student-training program, and taught a PE class for college credit for those students who wanted to pursue a high school training program. She developed numerous protocols we still use today and her vision of high school athletic training led to our very own concussion protocol program, which was in existence well before a California State Assembly Bill mandated concussion protocol in high schools. She welcomed AED's onto the campus, taught first aid and CPR, and created a seamless relationship with the Orthopedic Doctors at UCSF, where they both support our teams and offer our injured athletes an opportunity to get x-rays and MRI's the next business day.
In her tenure at SI, Marla has been a great friend to all and been so supportive of other departments in the school. She has always been willing to lend a hand or offer support whenever, and wherever needed. Marla has been a true professional showing both superior knowledge and skill and always displaying a friendly and respectful manner with the athletes, coaches, and students.
She will be greatly missed as an everyday presence in the training room. However, Marla will still be working part-time at SI. She will continue to teach the PE Sports Medicine Class and work in the training room 1-day a week. Additionally, she will take on some duties in the Athletic Department offices.
We are excited she will remain a part of St. Ignatius and the Athletic Department will still be a part in this new chapter of her life!
