Norman A. Hammersly '36
Norman A. Hammersly 87, died peacefully at his home on January 8 after a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family, comforted by the love of all who knew him. Norman grew up in San Francisco and was educated at St. Bridgid, St.Ignatius, and the University of SF. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of captain while serving throughout the Pacific Theatre. He returned to the Bay Area after the war and entered U.C. Berkeley to study civil engineering. It was at Cal that he met Marjorie Allen, whom he wooed and wed. They were together for 60 years, raising four children together in Marin County before retiring to Santa Rosa. They shared a love of travel, history, literature, and language. Norm's beloved wife Marge preceded him in death by 18 months and they are now reunited. Norman is remembered fondly as a loving father and Renaissance man by his family, as a creative problem-solver and colleague by his co-workers at PG&E, where he worked as an engineer for 38 years, and as a kindred spirit by everyone else including his beloved peers in the Hood Mountain chapter of SIRS and the Star of the Valley Men's Club, as well as the many friends he made in Oakmont. He is survived by his four children: Steve, Laura, Peter, and Lisa, and a dozen grandchildren. His life will be celebrated with a Requiem Mass at 11AM on Sat., Jan. 26th at the Star of the Valley Church in Oakmont, followed by a memorial in the parish center. Flowers may be sent the church.
