Kevin Visser '48
Kevin Visser Born Feb. 13, 1930 in San Francisco died March 22, 2008 in Santa Rosa, CA. after a courageous 14 year battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife Karen; his sons Neal and Ian MacKenzie; and his daughter Martha and granddaughter, Laurel. Also survived by his brother Hugh and numerous nieces and nephews. After graduation from St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco in 1948, Kevin served a one year tour of duty as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force. He started working in butcher shops as young as 12 years of age and apprenticed as a butcher at 19. His experience and expertise awarded him the role of meat manager in various meat markets in the Bay Area. Kevin switched careers in 1956 and graduated from the San Francisco Police Academy. He was in the top 20 of his class, and accepted a position in the San Francisco Police Dept. Later, for personal reasons, he left the police dept. and returned to work as a meat manager and supervisor. He was a meat supervisor in various supermarket chains in northern and central CA. He owned Larkfield Meats in Santa Rosa until a severe work injury ended his career as a butcher. He loved garage sales and had a knack for finding antique pieces of furniture that looked like junk and transforming it into a piece of beauty. There is furniture in each of the homes of Neal, Ian and Karen that Kevin touched with the skill of a craftsman. From garage sales he bought his friends tools they could use and loaned many of his tools to friends. He was a friend to many, a devoted husband and caring father and will be sorely missed. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Episcopal Church, 1500 E. Cotati Ave., Rohnert Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kevin's name to, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 750, New York, NY 10021. Please specify "prostate cancer research."
