Frank Kelly '44
Frank J. Kelly, Jr. Passed away peacefully at home in Napa on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Oakland on November 23, 1921, the son of Frank and Jule Kelly. He later moved to San Francisco where he graduated from St. Ignatius High School. Frank received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy and graduated Class of 1944. He volunteered for the submarine service and completed five war patrols. After resigning from the Navy in 1946 Frank married Jane Mason and moved to Palo Alto, where they raised five children. Frank worked as chief estimator for Barrett Construction Company, then as a director at SMP Architects and Planners, and later as marketing director for Rudolph & Sletten, Inc. In 1978 he served as national president of the American Association of Cost Engineers. He was a member of the Stanford Golf Club, Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club, and later Silverado Country Club, Napa, where he and Jane moved in 1994. For 47 years he hosted the "Kelly Open," a golf tournament for his friends. Frank and Jane recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at a family gathering in Monterey. He is survived by Jane; their children: Maureen of Nipomo; Steve, and wife, Deborah of Morgan Hill; Barbara Ranes, and husband, Jim of Redwood City; Susan of Seattle; and James, and wife, Lauren of Folsom; and six grandchildren: Jacqueline and Michael Stoltey; Greg, Molly and Brian Ranes; and Tara Kelly. Also survived by brother, Jack, of Pompano Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass celebrating Frank's life will be said on Friday, April 11, 2008, at 1:00pm, St. Apollinaris Church, 3700 Lassen Street, in Napa, CA, 94558.
