Rodney H. Hamblin '41
Rodney H. Hamblin August 23, 1922 - May 7, 2008 Rodney passed away peacefully May 7, 2008 in San Francisco at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Joseph Merrill Hamblin and Josephine Garbarino Hamblin. Rodney is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56-years Delia Scopel Hamblin; his son Douglas; daughter-in-law, Clarisse Hamblin; cherished granddaughters, Caroline and Olivia Hamblin; brother, Joseph Hamblin; sister-in-law, Virginia Hamblin; niece, Lenore Schlinger and her sons James and Jonathon; niece, Rochelle Hamblin; niece, Barbara Scopel and nephew, Richard Scopel. Rodney attended Star Of The Sea Grammar School and St. Ignatius High School. During WW II, Rodney was a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and narrowly survived piloting the infamous B-24 "Liberator" bomber. After the war, Rodney attended The University Of San Francisco for undergrad studies and eventually for Law School. In 1951, he was admitted to the California State Bar. After a brief stint in private practice, Rodney was appointed by then Attorney General Robert Kennedy, to the position of Assistant United States Attorney for the Environmental Resources Division, where he remained for over 25-years. During that time, he tried numerous high profile cases involving federal land use. After many successes in this area, The U.S. Federal Court appointed Rodney to the position of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California. Rodney remained physically active all his life. His passions included running and tennis and most of all golf where he was a long-time member of Harding Park Golf Course. He was also a talented artist and regularly won awards at the Burlingame Arts Society. His keen eye for detail made him realize that the first hole at Harding was a little open to the right side, so he took it upon himself to plant a tree in that spot-that tree remains there today. Beyond his many accomplishments, Rodney was a man dearly loved by his family and his many longtime friends. He will be remembered as a man of wisdom and wit, character and integrity. We will miss Rodney as a husband, father and grandpa more than could ever be expressed in words, but his warm spirit and generous nature will live on in our hearts and in our cherished memories.
