Faculty Biographies

Katie Wolf

Katie Wolf, Fine Arts Chair, received her M.F.A. From the San Francisco Art Institute and her B.A. from Santa Clara University in 1972. She designed and implemented the visual arts curriculum at St. Ignatius in 1977 and has been teaching Art and Architecture 1A , Art and Architecture 1B, Studio Art A, Studio Art B, Studio Art C/Sacred Symbols, 3D Studies/Mixed Media Sculpture A, 3D studies/Mixed Media Sculpture B from that time to the present. As Scenic Artist and moderator of the student paint crew for all of the theatrical productions from 1973 to the present, she collaborates with the director, technical director and costumer in preparation for teaching the student paint crew the painting techniques necessary and an understanding of the communal nature of a theatrical production. In addition to her daily teaching load, Katie was chosen to receive the Spohn Excellence in Teaching Grant, received a Summer Curriculum Grant in 2000 to develop the Sacred Symbols course, has taught several Summer Intensives that challenged students to create large-scale outdoor sculptures that were designed for the S.I. campus, was chosen as artist-in-residence at the "Dump" ( Nor-Cal Waste Treatment Transfer Center) and guided nine high school students in a month long creative pursuit of forming sculptures from recycled materials in the studio on site at the "Dump", was selected as San Francisco high school art teacher of the year, was one of five high school architecture teachers selected nationally to participate in a week's residency at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and has been selected as a conference presenter at the annual National Art Education Association conference in New York, Miami, Minneapolis, Denver and Boston as well as a presenter at the California Arts Education Association. Her students consistently win honors at local and national competitions ranging from the annual Elks Lodge #3 high school art contest to the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition and the San Francisco bay area Eco-Arts High school competition. At St. Ignatius Katie has served as chair of the Faculty Development Board 1997-2000, member of the Board of Regents 1993-1997, member of the Principal Search Committee 1998, member of the Faculty Development Committee for Long Range Planning 1999 and Fine Art Department Chair 1994 to the present. Professional memberships include the National Art Education Association, Jesuit Secondary Education Association, National Catholic Education Association, International Sculpture Center, Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, Artship Foundation, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Fine Arts Museums. In the larger community, Katie has served on the S.F. Archdiocesan Environment, Art and Architecture Committee, the California Province of the Society of Jesus Sponsorship Review Process Committee, board member of the Artship Foundation and continues as a working artist exhibiting and selling her work. Katie has been developing and implementing curriculum to teach the creative process for over 35 years in San Francisco. Subject areas include architecture, sculpture, painting and set design. Her teaching has inspired thousands of students to recognize and express their gift of creativity. Their work consistently receives national and regional honors. Her personal creative work ranges from environmental fabric designs for the vast and modern St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco to intimate sacred spaces, Byzantine icons and an Art and Nature Retreat site located in a pristine wilderness area of northern California. An ancient and personal symbol system imbues her large scale paintings, welded steel sculptures, stained glass pieces, painted fabric wall scrolls and wearable art with an energy that presents itself as a bridge allowing the Sacred to be sensed in our daily living.

Dr. Gillian Clements

Dr. Gillian Clements received her undergraduate and master's degrees in violin performance from Boston University and Rice University, respectively, and her Doctorate in Music Education ('08) from Boston University. Dr. Clements recently returned from Kenya, where she lived and worked from August 2006-January 2008, in order to complete research for her dissertation and start a String Program for 80 students at the Mount Kenya Academy (www.mountkenyaacademy.com). In addition to the Mount Kenya Academy String Program, Dr. C co-founded String Fling (Rice University & Dana Hall School - Wellesley, MA) with fellow graduate students at Rice University. Dr. C has taught at Boston University, the Boston University Tanglewood Music Center, New England Conservatory's Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, and the Rice University Preparatory Program. She has performed as violinist with the Houston Grand Opera and Ballet Orchestras, North Carolina Symphony, New England String Ensemble, the Nairobi Orchestra (Kenya), Key West Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Monterey Symphony, Berkeley Opera, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Sacramento Philhamonic, Santa Rosa Symphony, and even a rock band (Vampire Weekend). In 2008-09 you'll find Dr. C on stage with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

Ted Curry

Ted Curry, after graduating from St. Ignatius College Preparatory, attended San Francisco State University where he was an acting major with a Musical Theatre emphasis. Following college, he traveled the world, performing professionally in Europe, Asia, South America, North America, and Africa. Ted has acted, sung and danced professionally in film, television and on stage. He operated his own critically acclaimed theatrical production company, T.K.C. Productions, and was the Managing Director of Contra Costa Musical Theatre, Contra Costa's premiere musical theatre Company. In addition to teaching dance and acting at S.I., Ted has also taught speech, been in charge of the liturgy choir and directed the freshman, sophomore and junior retreat programs. He became the Student Activities Director in 2004 and beginning 2006, Ted will be the Director of Performing Arts at S.I. For over twenty years, Ted has directed, Children's Theatre, High School Theatre, Community Theatre, Regional Theatre and Professional Theatre. His directing has been nominated and won Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards, Solano County Artie Awards, and Contra Costa Shellie Awards. Ted has also been nominated and won for his acting and continues to act in various productions throughout the Bay Area.

Meredith Cecchin Galvin

Meredith Cecchin Galvin graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in 1997 and moved on to Santa Clara University where she received her B.A. in Theatre Arts & English. Ms. Galvin received her Secondary Teaching Credential in English and her M.A. in Teaching in 2003 from the University of San Francisco. Ms. Galvin returned to teach Dance at S.I. in 2001 and added Drama to her teaching load in 2005. Ms. Galvin directs the annual Dance Concert and has served as chorographer and director for the Spring Musical and Fall Play.

Carlos Gazulla

Carlos Gazulla received his B.F.A. from the Central University of Barcelona and his teaching credential from the Polytechnical University of Catalonia in Barcelona (Spain) in 1990. Between 1987 and 1993 completed a five year program at the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia (IEFC) in Barcelona (Spain.) In 1997 he obtained his M.F.A. from the Academy of Art College and he was one of the recipients of a grant awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Spain to complete graduate studies abroad. He has attended many different photography workshops including IDEP and International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York.

Carlos has taught at Betlem High School and the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia in Barcelona. He has also taught at the City College of San Francisco and Skyline College. He is currently teaching in the Language and Fine Arts departments at Saint Ignatius College Prep. His experience as a photographer includes working for the centenarian newspaper Heraldo de Aragón and as corporate photographer for Norstar Corporation. Here he produced all kinds of projects for this corporation including calendars, brochures and posters. Working at Bowles Sorokko's Gallery in San Francisco he produced high quality reproductions of some of the most important artists including originals of Picasso, Chagall, Miró, etc. He worked with both 35mm and large format cameras. These images were later printed on a variety of postcards, brochures and art catalogues.

He has won five photography national university competitions in Spain including three First Place Awards in Murcia, Seville and Barcelona. His work has been published in several newspapers, magazines, books and catalogues including the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner magazine, Heraldo de Aragón, El País, Avui Diumenge, Photo Metro, Foto Revista, Avui, San Mateo Times, El Semanal, Update, Inside SI and many others.

Chad Zullinger

Chad Zullinger earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the California State University, San Francisco.  Mr. Zullinger is a native Californian where he has taught both in public and private high schools in the San Francisco bay area.  During his residency at the University of Delaware, Mr. Zullinger completed his Master of Music in Choral Conducting.  In the spring of 2005, Mr. Zullinger was the acting director of Choral Activities which included preparing the prestigious UD Chorale for performances of the Verdi’s Requiem with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.

Since 2005 Mr. Zullinger’s high school choir programs have consistently earned the rating of Unanimous Superior at the California Music Educator Association choir festivals, the Napa Valley Invitational Choral Classic, and the prestigious Golden State Choir Competition, Southern California.  For the past two years, Mr. Zullinger was the Director of Vocal Music at Albany High School, conducting four curricular choirs ranging from men’s and women’s choirs to a larger mixed Concert Choir and advanced Chorale.  In the summer of 2007 he completed his first season as a performer at the Carmel Bach Festival performing J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and most recently was an American delegate at the 8th World Symposium on Choral Music in Copenhagen, Denmark.

He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, and the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.  Presently, he resides in the East Bay with his wife, Angela.
