For homework, please listen to the 1st 30 minutes of the Reza Aslan talk on his new book. After you are finished, please answer the following questions:

1) Please list 5 main points he makes in this talk.

2) Please discuss 1 point from the above 5 that really resonated with you. What made sense, what was confusing, what questions remain?

3) What do you think the future of Islam and the West will be? Given our discussions, readings and film thus far.

For 4th meeting this week, please complete your last set of Smith Questions - yeah! on Taoism. Please read Taoism and complete the questions in Smith.

For Monday, please complete the Islam Final Synthesis also on the main page of the website. Please make sure you type, 1 1/2 spaced and length is 600-700 words. We will share these on Monday in Orradre Chapel.

1) Your Final Exam is on the main page, and also here - Final Essay

The Final Essay is due on Wed. Dec. 17th when we gather in Orradre Chapel from 8:30-9:45.

2) While we conclude this week, you are asked to read the following by 2 texts by Monday:

  • The Human Condition by Father Thomas Keating, pgs. 1-45. Answer the following questions:
  1. What is the human condition, according to Keating?
  2. What is the false self?
  3. "Spiritual Awareness is designed by God to become our normal awareness." How does Keating make the case for this? What do you think?
  4. Keating combines modern psychological theory with Christian spirituality, what insight really resonated with you?
  5. Questions, comments, please add any additional thoughts of your own.
  • Please read Huston Smith's Final Examination pgs. 244-249.  We will discuss what he says for our Final Day.  Please answer these 3 questions in your notes for our discussion and bring to class.

1) How does Smith deal with the relation between religions?

2) What wisdom do these Wisdom Traditions offer the world?

3) Given our pluralistic, modern world, what is our response going forward in the complex times we are living in?

Please bring both texts to our final day and your questions and answers... I will collect at the end of the period.

Use the questions as potential starting points for your essay. We will also discuss in class.
