A Prayer of Surprise

(for my children)

May the sun always rise for you,

May the moon always motion

in the pools of your eyes.

Be surprised.

May the dawn always dance for you

in the colors of clouds

that deepen to white

when the smoke of the night

lifts the seams of its shroud

exposing your eyes to the robin's egg sky.

Be surprised.

May the flights of small birds

make mosaics of light

like a whisper of words

spoken at night

that flash into song

when you dream when you wake

may they scatter and shake

in the music's delight.

Be surprised.
