Diplomacy House Rules

  • Based in 4th Edition Rules
  • All decisions by the game moderator are considered to be final, even if in error, 18 hours after the game turnaround is first posted; this prevents second-guessing and/or whining later in the game
  • Orders must be submitted on time by e-mail to the moderator or by phone call to the moderator; if orders are not received on time, the country will be placed in civil disorder for that round; it is your responsibility to make sure you are in accordance with this clock
  • The moderator will do his or her best to understand mistyped orders; in the event of unresolvable or ambiguous orders, the order will be canceled and the unit will be ordered to hold
  • The moderator and his/her e-mail account are off-limits to espionage, so as to not give an unfair advantage to players in his/her immediate vicinity. Players are expected to interpret this rule as conservatively as possible.
  • When submitting orders, territory names can either be written in full or they can be abbreviated according to the table on the last page of the 4th Edition Rules; please do not invent your own abbreviations
  • Players who drop out are obliged to find their own replacement; if no replacement is found, their country goes into civil disorder; after two turns of civil disorder, the player is considered to be dropped out and receives 0.00 points at the end of the game (see below); the country continues to be in civil disorder for the remainder of the game
  • The end-of-game scoring system, based on a modified Calhamer system, is as follows:
    • If a player wins by controlling 18 supply centers, he or she gains 7.00 unweighted points
    • If a draw is declared, players who have not conceded split these 7.00 unweighted points among them, rounded down to nearest 0.01
    • Players who survive to the end of the game each receive 0.50 unweighted points
    • Players who are eliminated (defeated) or who concede the game each receive 0.25 unweighted points
    • Players who drop out of the game without finding a standby (replacement) player receive 0.00 unweighted points; if they do find a standby, see below
    • After unweighted points are distributed, each player receives final (weighted) points, which consist of the unweighted points divided by the following factors, then multiplied by the average weight:
      • Austria: 1.13
      • England: 1.39
      • France: 1.44
      • Germany: 1.09
      • Italy: 0.96
      • Russia: 1.29
      • Turkey: 1.27
      • Average weight: 1.22
    • (Note that the weights above were determined through large number statistics of average win percentages over many years of moderated convention play.)
    • Only points won on the scoring system detailed here can count for this rating system
    • Points cannot be transfered between players
    • If a player drops out before orders are submitted in Spring 1904, but manages to locate a standby player, final points are divided equally between the original player and the standby player(s); otherwise, the original player gets a double share
