COURSE OFFERINGS

DANCE 1A

Course Description: Students will explore the study and development of ballet, jazz, and creative dance forms. Students will observe the work of major choreographers and performers and will learn a history and vocabulary of dance and about general physical health issues related to dance. Students will analyze the styles of dance in a research project and create a dance in small groups for a final project. Students will be introduced to the art resources that our city has to offer and will see what S.I. has to offer in the Fine Arts. This course satisfies one semester of the University of California entrance requirements for fine arts when paired with Dance 1B.

DANCE 1B

Course Description: Students will learn basic skills of modern dance with an emphasis on history, creative use of the body in space, and choreography. Because modern dance is the personal expression of the dancer or choreographer, the students will be required to invent and experiment with new ways of moving. To prepare the students for a variety of modern dance and creative movement projects, the students will review ballet and lyrical jazz forms introduced in Dance I and see the evolution of modern dance from these forms. Students will demonstrate their skills by choreographing a modern dance piece and by writing a short research paper on a modern dance choreographer. Students will also be introduced to the dance performance resources that our city has to offer. This course satisfies one semester of the University of California entrance requirements for fine arts when prefaced with Dance 1A.

DANCE WORKSHOP

Course Description: Students will attend technique class two days a week focusing strongly on Ballet and Jazz Technique.  After technique, students will work on choreography pieces of varying styles with either instructor.  In choreography, students may study and practice various dance forms possibly including ballet, lyrical, jazz, modern, hip-hop, tap and character dance.  Students will strengthen technique and performance skills.  Students will perform at the S.I. Dance Concert and in the Fine Arts Assembly as final projects for this class.  This class is designed for students with significant dance experience.
