Philosophy and Mission Statement

Preface: The Graduate at Graduation: Profile 2020 and the Counseling Department

The philosophy, which guides the Counseling Department, has its roots in the Grad at Grad: Profile 2020. The philosophy includes not only the pursuit of knowledge of subject matter, but also the total development of the person, encompassing the religious and humanistic elements that are part of traditional Jesuit philosophy. Specifically, the Grad at Grad: Profile 2020 document has definitive implications for the Counseling Department.

Counseling Department Statement of Philosophy

St. Ignatius College Preparatory is a community which strives to unite the philosophy of Christian living with academic, social and career goals. In this spirit, counselors share common academic and extracurricular purposes, while participating in a community built on Christian values.

The counselors at St. Ignatius assume the responsibility of facilitating the development of each member of the student community in specific areas: academic, social, and career. Believing that instructional experiences comprise only a part of the Christian growth experience, each counselor endeavors to aid the students in this total developmental process. Implied in this process is the counselors' willingness to model (i.e. be) what they strive to elicit from their counselees: an attitude of openness, acceptance and honesty.

Our mission as counselors is to help students to think critically, advocate for themselves and take responsibility for their actions and decisions.

The goals and objectives of the Counseling Department are directed at helping the students grow in their awareness of their individual potentials in the academic, co-curricular and spiritual arenas and to seek these continual growth in these areas of their lives.
