- Course Description - This semester course is designed to give students a foundation for healthy living and decision-making and to provide new skills, experiences, and practical information needed to maintain physical, emotional, and social health throughout life. Students will have the opportunity to hear guest speakers with expertise in specific areas in the field and learn about health-related topics through a variety of projects. This course is designed to cultivate life-long health and underscores the uniqueness of each individual while presenting a well-rounded approach to the critical health issues in the lives of teenagers. This course integrates physical, social, psychological, intellectual, and emotional health as the most accurate measure of wellness. Students will be exposed to a wide array of current health issues and concerns. All topics combine biological, sociological, and psychological information. The course begins with an overview of general health and proceeds through specific health issues. Topics covered include nutrition and exercise, substance abuse and smoking, personal health care and hygiene, stress, depression, and sexuality. The goal of this course is to assist students in making healthy choices about their physical, emotional and social well being.
