PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

INTRODUCTION
All students must enroll in a minimum of two semesters of Physical Education classes.**  The program is designed to promote a sense of health and fitness, personal responsbility in being fit, and an appreciation of individual and group achievement.  It provides them the opportunity to participate in activities that may be of ongoing interest to them throughout their lives.  The Physical Education grade is included in the Grade Point Average.  Students may take additional elective classes after their requirement is completed.

COURSES

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 110M/111F (7110/7111) - GENERAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Grade - 9
  • Length - One Semester
  • Type of Course - Core course required for graduation
  • Prerequisite - None
  • Criteria for Enrollment - All students must enroll
  • Course Description - This is a lecture, reading, and activity course.  In physical education students learn the fundamentals of fitness, health and recreation.  The students are exposed to a variety of lifetime activities aimed at achieving a basic level of fitness including:  general physical conditioning, physical fitness testing, swimming, and various individual and team activities.  Students are educated through active participation, a textbook, and a semester project.  Health, nutrition and alcohol education add to the academic component of this course.

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 210 (7210) - WEIGHT TRAINING AND FITNESS

  • Prerequisite - Physical Education 11oM or 111F
  • Criteria for Enrollment - None
  • Course Description - This class is a weight-lifting and fitness class,  The goal of this class is to introduce weight-lifting as a method of fitness for life, to increase each student’s working knowledge of weight training, to teach each student proper weight room safety and weight-lifting techniques, to expose each student to different training methods.  Each student will participate in completing a semester project, as well as completing certification in First Aid, CPR, or equivalent course during the participating semester.

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 215 (7215) - ADVANCED WEIGHT TRAINING

  • Grade Level - 10, 11, 12
  • Length - One Semester
  • Type of Class - Elective
  • Prerequisite - Physical Education 210
  • Criteria for Enrollment - Instructor Approval
  • Course Description - This course is designed for all off-season athletes who wish to continue their strength training.  Students will learn intermediate level exercises designed to improve athletic performance and prevent injuries.  Students will train in the weight room, gym, on the track, and in the swimming pool.  Training methods will include free weights, nautilus machines, plyometrics, running, and swimming.  Each student is required to visit and train at three different workout chains.  There is also an educational component consisting of a brief history of weight training, basic human anatomy and physiology, and current topics related to weight training.  This course differs from PE 210 in its intensity of workout, exercises, lecture material, and semester project.

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 315 (7315) - COMPETITIVE & RECREATIONAL SPORTS

  • Grade Level - 10, 11, 12
  • Length - One Semester
  • Type of Class - Elective
  • Prerequisite - Physical Education 110M or 111F
  • Criteria for Enrollment - None
  • Course Description - The purpose of this course is to expose each student to recreational and competitive sports.  The class is an activity and lecture course, which will also involve coordinating the intramural progam.  Students will participate in New Game instruction and learn different teaching styles.  Activities include aquatics, football, lacrosse, basketball, tennis, softball, and volleyball.  A term project is required, as well as certification in First Aid, CPR, or equivalent course.  Certification must be completed during the semester enrolled in PE class.

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 615 (7615) - SPORTS MEDICINE 1 PREVENTION & CARE OF ATHLETIC INJURIES

  • Grade Level - 9, 10, 11, 12
  • Length - One Semester
  • Type of Class - Elective
  • Prerequisite - Physical Education 110M or 111F or by instructor approval
  • Criteria for Enrollment - Instructor approval
  • Course Description - This course prepares students to become student trainers.  This is a lecture, reading, and activity course.  In Sports Medicine 1, students will learn the fundamentals of anatomy, prevention, care, treatment, taping, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Students are exposed to a variety of situtations/scenarios aimed at achieving a basic knowledge of sports medicine through  various "hands-on"  activities.  Students  are educated and evaluated on their performance through active participation, homework assignments, tests/quizzes, taping, and game day evaluation.

    * This class is offered at various times throughout the day and evening to allow for the academic and practical components of the course.

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 715 (7715) - LIFETIME OF FITNESS

  • Grade Level - 9, 10, 11, 12
  • Length - One Semester
  • Type of Class - Elective
  • Prerequisite - Physical Education 110M or 111F or by instructor approval
  • Criteria for Enrollment - None
  • Course Description - PE 715 seeks to introduce students to activities that they can use well into the future. As students mature into adulthood, their physical person must also adapt, and PE 715 will introduce our current students to fitness principles relative to this growth. Course activities will include weight-lifting, aquatics, tennis, yoga, Pilates and general physical conditioning. Some classes may be held off campus with parental consent. CPR & SFA will also be required.

    *This class will be offered pending staffing availability and adequate enrollment.

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 950 - INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS

  • Grade Level - 10, 11, 12
  • Length - One Semester
  • Type of Class - Elective. This class does not fulfill the PE graduation requirement and is not included in the GPA or on the transcript.
  • Prerequisite - None
  • Criteria for Enrollment - Instructort approval. Enrollment is via roster submitted ny instructor. Students should not list this course on the Schedule Request Forms.
  • Course Description - This course provides students who plan to try out for an interscholastic sport with an opportunity to condition in that sport during the off- season. Workouts are limited to six hours per week. Practices are limited to ten days, and must be held as follows: Fall and winter sports during the spring semester, spring sports during the fall semester. Football is subject to the conditions placed on it by the West Catholic Athletic League. Tryouts may not be held during this period. This is a non-graded class.

    Enrollment in PE 950 does not qualify a student for a study period during the regular academic day.

 

**NOTE: Dance 1A and Dance 1B and Dance Workshop will fulfill Physical Education's second semester requirement.

Waiver information
In addition, the student may be waived from the second semester of Physical Education if all of the following criteria are met:

  • He or she earns three athletic letters after freshman year;
  • The three athletic letters are earned from two different sports;
  • At least one of the letters is from a Varsity sport;
  • At least one of the letters must be earned during the student’s junior or senior year; and
  • Letters must be earned by the end of the Fall semester of the student’s senior year.

Please note: A student must participate actively during the sport’s entire season in order to earn a letter. Any student who does not fulfill the above requirements by the end of the Fall semester of his or her senior year must enroll in a second semester of PE during the spring.
