PEER ASSISTANCE I (9010)*

- Course Description - This semester course will provide intensive training for students wishing to become peer helpers. During the first marking period, students will be taught basic skills needed in a counseling milieu: communication, conflict mediation, and group facilitation. While reflecting on their own issues, values, and experiences, students will explore a developmental model of adolescent psychology. Participants will also develop creative ways to engage peers in discussion of teen issues. Once the initial training is completed, students will become involved in a variety of peer-helping activities for 1 or 2 hours each week. Throughout the year, peer helpers will meet at least twice each month for continuing supervision, evaluation, and planning.
NOTE: This class will count as one of the six classes required each semester. The grade will be included in the GPA.

HEALTH/WELLNESS CLASS (9013)*

- Course Description - This semester course is designed to give students a foundation for healthy living and decision making. It is the intention of the Wellness Program to provide students with a class to give them new skills, experiences, and practical information needed to maintain physical, emotional, and social health throughout life. This course is designed to cultivate a love of fitness and life-long health and underscores the uniqueness of each individual while presenting a well-rounded approach to the critical health issues in the lives of teenagers. This course integrates physical, social, psychological, intellectual, and emotional health as the most accurate measure of wellness. Students will be exposed to a wide array of current health issues and concerns. All topics combine biologial, sociological, and psychological information. The course begins with an overview of general health and proceeds through specific health issues. Topics covered include nutrition and exercise, substance abuse and smoking, personal health care and hygiene, stress, depression and sexuality. The goal of this course is to assist students in making healthy choices about their physical, emotional and social well being.
