LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

INTRODUCTION
St. Ignatius offers four languages other than English which fulfill graduation requirements: French, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. Students are required to study two years of the same language. Second year language is taught almost entirely in the target language. It is the goal of the department to ensure that after completion of the second year, students are able to communicate in the second language at the intermediate level (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Guidelines) and to employ a broad understanding of the countries where the language in question is spoken. Second year students who do not meet Level 3 Criteria for Enrollment — (a minimum semester grade of B- [C and C+ with teacher and counselor written approval]) may not take the Level 3 course. Third year students who do not meet Level 4 Criteria for Enrollment — (a minimum semester grade of B- [C and C+ with teacher and counselor written approval]) may not take the Level 4 course.
NOTE: Documented Learning Disabled students are strongly recommended to enroll in Latin to complete their language requirements. Students who are documented Learning Disabled with deficiencies in the area of language which prohibit completion of the language requirement may take American Sign Language at a local community college in lieu of a language at St. Ignatius. Students taking American Sign Language must be preapproved through the Learning Specialist at St. Ignatius. Students must complete a semester of a language before being considered for American Sign Language.

CRITERIA FOR HONORS ENROLLMENT:
All students interested in Honors and AP courses who meet the grade criteria in the Language Department will be evaluated by their current teacher and then approved for Honors Placement by the Language Department Chair. This process asks for a report of the student’s grade in his or her current language course, and an evaluation by the current teacher of the student’s grasp and application of grammatical concepts, oral ability and participation, written work, motivation and interest in advanced language study and overall recommendation. In addition, certain grade minimums must be met in order to be considered for an honors or AP course: Level 2 and 3 Honors courses—minimum semester grade of B in current course; Level 4 AP courses — minimum semester grades of B in Level 3H course or minimum semester grade of A in regular Level 3 or 4 course and written and oral evaluation by current AP teacher.

FRENCH 1 (4010)

Course Description - This course is designed for beginners. No background in French is required. All four language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing are developed simultaneously. The emphasis is on oral communication and active classroom participation of the student. This course will cover essential vocabulary and basic structures of the French language so that the student will be able to communicate in the second language. By the end of the course, each student has the ability to do the following: ask and answer basic questions; use proper word order; use common idiomatic expressions and write short compositions. The student is introduced to various Frenchspeaking cultures.

FRENCH 2 (4020)

Course Description - Building upon the student’s foundation obtained in French 1, French 2 is designed to develop further the listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills of the language. It is also designed to expose the student to the culture of the francophone countries. French 2 emphasizes active conversation, increased vocabulary, more familiarity with verb tenses and the major grammatical structures, as well as an increase in one’s ability to comprehend and express oneself in the spoken and written language.

FRENCH 2H (4023)

Course Description - French 2H is a lively class designed to challenge the student who during his or her first year, has actively participated in class and demonstrated the ability to advance more rapidly than the average college preparatory student. The teacher will aid students in acquiring the following skills: increased oral proficiency, expanded vocabulary, the ability to read, comprehend and discuss selections appropriate to intermediate level students, and increased ability to write compositions. Students will develop in-depth their ability to express themselves in spoken and written French. Students will ask and answer questions in complete, coherent and grammatically correct sentences demonstrating an appropriate vocabulary range and a mastery of grammar structures previously studied. More in-depth attention will be paid to francophone cultures the world over.

FRENCH 3 (4030)

Course Description - French 3 is an advanced language course designed for the student who has done at least C work in the second year of French. It is a two semester course which aims to improve dramatically the speaking ability of the student, to review systematically grammar previously studied, to master new concepts in French, and to enhance the student’s knowledge of the cultural diversity of the French-speaking world. The emphasis on improvement of oral skills will be considerable. Students will be required to speak in French on a variety of topics and in a number of situations ranging from class discussions to oral presentations and situations. The course materials are designed to stimulate conversation and to perfect that skill, striving to imitate the native speaker’s pronunciation, accent, and rhythm. The second semester will focus more on literature (plays, short stories, poems) and serves as a preparation for French 4.

Course Description - French 3H is an advanced language course designed for those students identified during their first two years as superior French students who wish to become fluent in French and wish to complete all four levels of French in high school. This advanced two-semester course is designed to develop in depth the speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills of the second language. The course is also designed to expose the students to the cultures of the French-speaking world. Constant review and reinforcement of previously studied vocabulary and grammar concepts are emphasized to enhance the development and mastery of the above-mentioned skills. Considerable emphasis will be given to enrich the students’ active vocabulary and increase their ability to comprehend and express themselves in spoken and written French. The students will be required to speak in French in various situations ranging from class discussions to oral presentations and skits. Students will be able to read with comprehension selected short stories, longer works of literature, and various selected articles. The course materials provide students with cultural information to be assimilated and appreciated.

FRENCH 4 (4040)*

Course Description - French 4 is an advanced language course designed as an introduction to literature and literary criticism, as well as an intensive review of fundamental grammar concepts. Through exposure to the short story, plays and novels, development of reading and writing skills is emphasized, with special time set aside for conversational practice and the perfection of speaking and listening skills. The target language will be the language of the classroom, although English will be used to explain complex grammar concepts. Exploration of the short story, play and/or novel as literary genres will enhance the students’ appreciation and understanding of both the language and the culture.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT FRENCH 4 (4043)*

Criteria for Enrollment - See criteria for Honors Enrollment. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement exam administered in May.
Course Description - AP French language covers the equivalent material of a third year college course in advanced French composition and conversation. The aims of this twosemester course are: to dramatically improve the students’ speaking ability; to review systematically grammar previously studied; to master—orally and in writing—new and more complex grammar concepts; to expose students to the literary use of French and to increase both their literal and critical reading skills; to prepare the students for the Advanced Placement French Language Examination; and to enhance the students’ knowledge of the French-speaking world. Considerable emphasis will be given to students’ expressing themselves in spoken and written French. Students will be required to speak in French in a variety of situations ranging from class discussion to oral presentations and debates. Students will read newspaper and magazine articles, short stories, poems, and a novel. The selected class materials are designed to stimulate and perfect conversation, and to assist students in imitation of the native speaker’s pronunciation, rhythm, moods, and humor as their abilities increase. Upon completion of the program students will take the College Board AP test.

JAPANESE 1 (4410)

Course Description - Students will learn all four of the language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Because the Japanese language has a totally different writing system, considerable emphasis will be placed on learning the Japanese syllables. As students gain knowledge, understanding and fluency, the communication in class will be done in Japanese only. Students will be exposed to Japanese culture through videos, books and cultural activities in order to develop an understanding of and appreciation for different cultures and people, customs, behavior and traditions.

JAPANESE 2 (4420)

Course Description - Japanese 2 is a continuation of Japanese 1, designed for students who have satisfactorily completed their first year of Japanese. The aims of this course are to help students develop their listening, speaking, writing and reading skills of the language. The student will be encouraged to speak in Japanese in various situations in order to become familiar with the cultural context in which Japanese speakers use different sets of expressions appropriate to the situation. This course emphasizes active conversation, increase in vocabulary, more basic grammatical structures, as well as an increase in the student's ability to comprehend and express himself or herself in the written language.

Course Description - Japanese 3 is an advanced level language course designed for those students who have acquired satisfactory competency skills during their first two years of language study. The course builds upon the skills and material covered in Japanese 1 and 2; it reviews all major grammatical structures and introduces a broader scope of grammatical knowledge. Emphasis is given to improving oral skills, broadening the range of grammatical structures the student can effectively use in writing and conversation, enriching the student's vocabulary and deepening his or her awareness of the Japanese-speaking world. This class is conducted mainly in Japanese except when complex grammar concepts require a clearer explanation in English. Students are expected to speak in Japanese at all times.

Students will be required to speak Japanese in a variety of situations, ranging from oral presentations to debates and class discussions. The students will read literature and current articles from newspapers and magazines.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT JAPANESE 4 (4444)*

Course Description - The AP Japanese Language and Culture course is designed to be comparable to college/university Japanese courses where students complete about 300 hours of collegelevel classroom instruction. Through the course, students will develop the productive, receptive, and cultural skills necessary to communicate with native speakers of Japanese; proficiency levels at the end of the course should reach the Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid range. The course articulates its goals in three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational; while also addressing other important goals: cultural competence, connections to other studies, comparisons between the target language/culture and those of the learners, and language usage beyond the traditional school environment. Students develop an expanded ability to communicate in culturally appropriate manners and in widening contexts; the capacity to widen their scope of knowledge; understanding of their own culture; strategies for further progress in bilingualism; interaction with Japanese speakers elsewhere.

LATIN 1 (4310)

Course Description - Ecce Romani! (Behold the Romans!) is a beginning course which teaches Latin primarily through reading (rather than through conversation). Students engage in the following activities: reading Latin aloud and silently; composing Latin questions and sentences; translating Latin sentences into English and vice-versa; memorizing and using vocabulary; developing listening and speaking skills; composing and presenting dialogues and conversations in Latin; studying the history and origin of English words derived from Latin; and learning about life in a Roman family and town. The aims of the course are: To teach students to read Latin accurately and confidently; and to familiarize students with life in the early Roman Empire.

LATIN 2 (4320)

Course Description - Latin 2 continues the progress of first-year Latin, introducing the topics of Roman dining, education, the baths, amphitheater and games, family and civic life. Students will read and write more sophisticated Latin, incorporating passive voice, various types of clauses, participles, infinitives and the subjunctive mood (mode), as they begin to transition to "real Latin," authentic primary sources from the Roman era. A major project of the first semester is to present an authentic Roman banquet for Latin 1 students.

Course Description - In Latin 2H, the more advanced students will more quickly acquire new knowledge of Latin grammar and sentence structures to enable them to read more sophisticated works of prose and poetry. Authentic Latin sources are gradually introduced, as students begin to learn about various aspects of Roman culture (Roman dining, education, the baths, amphitheater and games, family and civic life) through the works of the Romans themselves.

LATIN 3 PROSE (4330)*

Course Description - Latin 3 Prose is an advanced level language course for the serious student who has mastered the basic elements and concepts of Latin 1 and 2, and those students wishing to continue their Latin study, but not as Advanced Placement. The Latin Prose student completes the learning of Latin forms and grammar, concentrating on use of infinitives, subjunctive verbs, gerunds and gerundives within in classical Latin periodic sentence in Roman prose writers such as Caesar, Cicero, Livy, Plautus, Asconius. Students will encounter the genres of history, oratory, and comedy.

Course Description -
Latin 3H is an advanced language course designed for the superior Latin students who wish to continue to refine their Latin skills and reading ability. New grammar includes all uses of the subjunctive mood, gerund and gerundive; the student’s overriding task is to read and comprehend the variety of clauses and constructions which typically form the Latin periodic sentence. A study of rhetoric accompanies readings from speeches of Cicero. In addition to the prose readings mentioned in the description of Latin 3, the 3H student will study a selected Latin author, reading excerpts from his original works. Latin 3H is strongly recommended for students intending to enroll in Latin 4AP in the following year.

Course Description - Latin 4 Poetry is an advanced level language course for the serious student who has mastered the basic elements and concepts of Latin 1 and 2, and those students wishing to continue their Latin study but not as Advanced Placement. The Latin Poetry 3/4 student completes the learning of Latin forms and grammar, concentrating on use of infinitives, subjunctive verbs, gerunds and gerundives as used by Roman poets including Catullus, Ovid, Vergil and Martial. Students will encounter the genres of love poetry, myth, epic and satire.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT LATIN 4 (4343)*

Course Description - The Latin 4AP course in Vergil is an advanced reading course in Vergil's Aeneid. Selections from books 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, and 12 are read in Latin; the entire work is read in English. In addition to appropriate translation skills, students are expected to employ literary analysis (much as in an English literature class), in order to fully appreciate the Latin work being studied. The aims of this year-long course are: to improve the students' ability to read, understand and translate Latin poetry; to expose students to poetic syntax, figures of speech, and meter; to involve students in literary analysis of Latin poetry; to enhance the student's understanding of the literary and social contexts of the Roman world of the first century B.C. and A.D.; and to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam in Latin-Vergil.

SPANISH 1 (4110)

Course Description - Spanish 1 is designed for the beginning Spanish student. No background in Spanish is expected. Comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills are developed simultaneously from simple to more complex sentence structures. The language skills are presented in a logical progression so that the student learns by practice both in the classroom and at home with the help of on-line tutorials. The learning process is based on the active participation of each student in a variety of formats. Students learn essential vocabulary, basic structures of the language, and cultural aspects of Latin America and Spain. By the end of the course, each student has the ability to do the following: Ask questions and answer them affirmatively or negatively using present tenses; arrange proper word order; speak and write clearly; write short compositions; and use common idiomatic expressions.

Course Description - Spanish 3 is an intermediate level language course designed for those students who have acquired satisfactory competency during their first two years of language study. The course builds upon the skills and material covered in Spanish 1 and 2; it reviews all major grammatical structures and introduces a broader scope of grammatical knowledge. Emphasis is given to improving oral skills, broadening the range of grammatical structures the student can effectively use in writing and conversation, enriching the student's vocabulary and deepening his/her awareness of present day social justice issues within the Spanish speaking world, as well as taking a look at the immigration issues facing latinos. This class is conducted in Spanish except when complex grammar concepts require a clearer explanation in English. Students are expected to speak in Spanish at all times.

Students will be required to speak in Spanish in a variety of situations ranging from class discussion to oral presentations and situations. Students will be able to read with comprehension selected short stories and newspaper and magazine articles. They will also become more informed about some of the contemporary problems and difficulties affecting Hispanic communities.

SPANISH 4 (4140)

Course Description - This two-semester course is an advanced language course designed for those students who who wish to improve and build upon their Spanish skills and delve deeper into the cultures and literature of the Spanish-speaking world. The course is comprised of an on-going review of all major grammar structures, as well as a thorough study of more complex grammar concepts. Considerable emphasis is given to mastering all grammar structures studied, enriching the student's vocabulary, increasing his/her ability to comprehend and express him/herself in both spoken and written Spanish, and broadening his/her cultural awareness of the Spanish-speaking world. This class is conducted in Spanish, and students are expected to speak Spanish at all times.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH 4 (4143)

Students will read newspaper and magazine articles, short stories and poems, and one to two full-length novels or plays by peninsular and/or Latin American authors. The selected class materials are designed to stimulate and perfect conversation and to assist students in the imitation of the native speaker’s pronunciation, rhythm, moods and humor as their abilities increase.

FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA Y SUS AMIGOS (4144)*

Course description - This semster-long Spanish course is designed for the student who has a working knowledge of Spanish, i.e., has grasped the grammar concepts learned in previous courses and is interested in utilizing his/her Spanish skills through reading authentic literature, viewing films, listening to music, and discussion. F. García Lorca is considered one of the premier authors of the 20th century. This course will study the theatre of F. García Lorca in addition to his poems and influences from the world of music, art, and gypsy folklore. We will also become familiar with the art of Salvador Dalí and the films of Luis Buñuel who were college friends of García Lorca and innovators in the surrealist movement. The students in this course will read two plays by F. García Lorca from his trilogy: Bodas de Sangre, Yerma. and/or La Casa de Bernada Alba, in addition to studying several of his poems. The course will be conducted in Spanish, and students will significantly broaden their vocabulary and grammar skills.

ESPANOL MODERNO (4145)*

Course description - Español Moderno is an advanced semester-long Spanish course designed for students who wish to improve their Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge, with particular emphasis on the improvement of oral communication skills. This course will study the literature of modern Latino authors, focusing on themes of common social issues facing the Latino population in the United states. The course will also explore classic and modern Latino music as a reflection of Latino pop-culture. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish and will help students acquire broader vocabulary and greater Spanish language proficiency both written and oral.

SPANISH 5H (4153)*

Grade Level - 10, 11, 12
Length - One Year
Type of Course - Elective which meets graduation requirement.
Prerequisite - Spanish 4 or 4AP
Criteria for enrollment - Minimum semester grade of B- in Spanish 4 or 4AP
Course description - This non-AP course is offered to students who are interested in maintaining their skills and pursuing further study of the language after completing Spanish 4 or Spanish 4AP. Through the use of a variety of cultural and literary readings, students acquire a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, Hispanic cultures, and refine their proficiency in all areas of the language. Spanish cinema, authentic materials, current events, and topics of interest to all students provide a basis for a wide variety of discussion, composition, roleplay, simulations, enhancement of vocabulary, and review of grammatical structures.
