CHRISTIAN SERVICE

Christian Service Requirements

  • Grade Level - Independent, supervised study
  • Length - Minimum 100 Service Hours
  • Type of Course - Required for Graduation
  • In SI’s "Profile of the Graduate at Graduation," we envision our graduates as mature young adults - emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, and religiously.  In addition to classroom lessons, we challenge our students to experience learning in the real world.  In this light, the service our students engage in helps to foster clear values that guide them toward a stronger understanding of Christian charity and justice.  In this way, they strive to become “men and women for others.”  As an integral part of the St. Ignatius curriculum and experience, we ask all students to make a Commitment To Service as a part of their graduation requirement.

    The Christian Service Commitment carries a curricular requirement of providing service to others for at least 100 hours.  Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of service activities during their time at SI.  For the most part, all volunteer experiences may be credited to a student’s service commitment as long they are completed at a nonprofit, nonpartisan agency and the appropriate documentation is provided in a timely manner to the Christian Service Office for verification.

    Core Service
    One integral part of the Commitment to Service is the Core Service Experience.  We ask that students engage in a Core Service Experience with the goal that this service will challenge them to:

    • Go beyond their immediate community (parish, neighborhood or school) to provide hands-on service to others in a way that addresses a social justice issue;
    • Reflect through an on-going journaling process;
    • Provide service to “marginalized or disadvantaged people or communities”  (some examples include children, elderly, frail/ill, homeless, mentally or physically challenged, immigrants, etc.);
    • Experience issues of social justice/human dignity in a different and new environment; and
    • Build personal relationships with agency clients and staff through significant and enduring service.

    The Christian Service Requirement is due at the start of Senior Year.  For more information, please review http://www.siprep.org/christian_service/index.cfm.
