WCAL Champs!!!

Both Varsity and JV win league titles.

Varsity
As the old saying goes, "It's not where you begin, but where you finish that matters." Avenged the early season lone dual meet loss at Valley Christian to garner the schools first ever WCAL Swimming Championships for girls or boys. The league title is the first since 1998 during the GPSL days with Menlo School.

The Varsity team began the day 35 points behind Valley Christian with Diving having been completed. Having closed the gap at the end of the 200 Free relay, the team sealed the win before the final relay with 4 finalists in both the 100 Back and 100 Breast. Individual wins are nice but depth wins Championships.

After an impressive Thursday Trials session that virtually left no chance for VC to come back, the team did not let up and set the tone early and often:

  • 200 Medley Relay. Without "The Beast" as anchor, the team finished first for its first ever WCAL relay win. Natalie Schwab had an unbelievable free leg of 24.44!!! Yup that's 24.44!!!
  • Mallory Ryan set a new school record in the 200 Free with a time of 1:58.15.
  • Francesca Lollini won the 50 Free with a 24.38. Not only did she lower her own school record, but she completed a three year rein as the WCAL 50 Free Champion. Each year she lowered the 50 Free record. That's over 24 straight wins in a row.
  • JC Sheppard lowered her own school record in the 100 Fly with a time of 59.61.
  • 200 Free Relay set a new school record with a time of 1:39.85. The time is well under All-American Consideration and now is close to the All-American Automatic standard of 1:38.82.

On to CCS as it returns the regions best pool for high school meet - Stanford University. The team is sending a school record 15 individuals to compete in a record 24 events and 3 relays.

More GOOD news later!!!

JV
Finished an undefeated dual meet season with a pasting (ala Bellarmine style) at the WCAL Championships. Nearest team, St. Francis, was over 210 points away. The team set four new WCAL meet records. Of note:
Sasza Lohrey - Finished with 3 CCS Swims (50 & 100 Free, 100 Back). Set new WCAL records in the 50 & 100 Free.
Loretta Roddy - Talked the talk and walked the walk with double wins in the 200 & 500 Free. She completed her JV career with a 58.87 in the lead off leg of the 400 Free Relay.
Relays - SI won every relay. The 200 & 400 Free Relays set new WCAL records.

Swimming

Despite winning just two races Saturday, consistency proved to be the key as the St. Ignatius girls won the West Catholic Athletic League championship over Valley Christian 430-386. The boys championship went to Bellarmine, which crushed the rest of the league, outscoring its nearest opponent, Valley Christian, 610-271.

Yet while the boys title was over early, the girls title was up for grabs until St. Ignatius earned two key wins. The first from Francesca Lollini in the 50-yard freestyle and the second from the girls 200-medley team, to beat a well-balanced Valley Christian squad.
