I came out to the Lake Merced boathouse in 1994 hoping to meet a crowd of rowers my own age to become acquainted in my new city. That was on a Friday and somehow by Monday I was staring at dozens of wide eyed 15 year olds in dire need of a rowing coach. For the most part the rest is simple … I fell in love with them all and never left. In fact I ended up literally shaping my career around these kids. I had rowed all through high school and as well at the University of Toronto in Canada. Once in San Francisco I quickly pursued a career in equity trading to take advantage of working New York market hours. It turns out that years of short tempered coaches, rigorous hours and the high stress of competitive athletics made me an ideal candidate for enjoying a career in equity trading.
My parents' still live in Canada where I grew up in St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada. I am the baby of the family with two older brothers. I started rowing at 14 largely because my older brother Derek would open the door to my bedroom at night and imitate the roar of the crowd in the bottom 500 meters of a race. He had won the Canadian Championships one year earlier in his Novice Eight and I thought he was pretty much an Olympian. Since that time I have missed only one year. That is nine years of rowing and now eight years of coaching … that means that over half my life has been spent going to the boathouse.
2001 will be my last season coaching at St. Ignatius. I have had a fantastic experience and am very grateful to have had the opportunity. The women's team is in excellent shape and it has made huge improvements over the past seven years. Last year when I realized that some of my first recruits had already graduated from PENN and Cal Berkeley … I started to feel pretty old. I have lots of ideas how I will spend my time. I am recently married and am looking forward to working on our new home. I can actually attend afternoon meetings at work and most importantly I can take better care of my own health and fitness. It is by no means the end of an era rather the foundation has been laid for many years of great success. I hope you will join me in making this an exciting season.
I always enjoy meeting families and hope I have a chance to meet everyone throughout the season. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns jennifer@wpryanconstruction.com. This is without a doubt the easiest way to get in touch.
