“The one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the one who hears the word and
understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.”

Dear Friend of Wildcat Athletics,

As Ignatian educators, we often describe what we do as “sowing seeds.” We view our mission as not only to instill knowledge and teach skills, but also, and most importantly, to transmit values, supporting the work that our parents do at home. And it’s wonderful when we are fortunate enough to see the fruits of our labor.

Such is the case with three of our newest coaches, just hired this summer, all alums who had outstanding careers as student-athletes, and moreover are outstanding individuals. Kelsey Wiegmann was a recipient of the John E. Brophy Award as the outstanding female athlete of the Class of 2002, Tim Szarnicki received the Dennis Carter Award as the most inspirational player on the boys’ basketball team in 2004, and Nick Alvarado won the Riley Sutthoff Award as the most inspirational runner on the boys’ cross country team in the fall of 2005. Then and now, all three embody the values we try to cultivate in our student-athletes. And now they have returned to St. Ignatius to carry on our work, to sow seeds for a new crop of Wildcat student-athletes.

Kelsey, Tim, and Nick join an excellent staff of Wildcat teacher-coaches. Over one hundred strong, our coaching staff is as diverse as our student body. Some are full-time teachers at SI. Others come to us from various walks of life. All give countless hours of their time in pursuit of the same goal: to use athletics as a means to develop young men and women who will make the world around them a better place.

You can help us to sow more seeds for the future. There is so much we need every year to provide our students with the best athletic program possible, and I know our friends will come through. You can choose any of the following:

• A single-person pass to our home games during the 2010-2011 school year for $60.
• A two-person pass to our home games in 2010-2011 for $100.
• A gold pass which admits the entire family to our home games in 2010-2011 for $175.

I’m happy to say that these prices remain unchanged from last year. And of course, sponsor pass holders continue to be entitled to admission to the Trophy football and basketball games, whether or not we are the home team. If you purchase a pass and wish to give an extra donation, any amount you send above the cost of the pass is tax-deductible. If you do not need a pass, you can simply send a fully tax-deductible donation to St. Ignatius Athletics.

A self-addressed envelope and card are enclosed for your response. Please fill out the card exactly the way you wish your name or organization to appear as a sponsor in our programs.

Thank you for helping us maintain the tradition of excellence that is SI athletics. Go Cats!

Sincerely,

ROBERT VERGARA

Director of Athletics
