JAMES KEATING AWARD
The James Keating Award recognizes the varsity baseball player each year who best exemplifies the Ignatian spirit both on and off the field.
Jim Keating, a member of the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame, was an outstanding athlete, a teacher for many years in the San Francisco Public School District, and the head baseball coach at St. Ignatius from 1955-1974. During those two decades, he fielded some of the best teams S.I. has ever seen and also developed many of the school's finest athletes. Moreover, Coach Keating instilled his players with those qualities by which St. Ignatius athletes have always been known: loyalty, dedication, enthusiasm, and good sportsmanship.
When Jim Dekker took over for his former coach, he instituted the award which bears Keating's name. Although there are many fine athletes among the recipients of the James Keating Award, it is not athletic ability which the award recognizes. Rather, it honors those who best demonstrate the spirit and drive, the concern for others, and the commitment to excellence which are the foundation on which the S.I. athletic program is built.
The Keating Award recipients are among those Ignatians who have set the high standards that the players of today are challenged to meet as they carry on the S.I baseball tradition
